Small crossover SUVs are all the rage these days for automotive customers — and two appealing models are the Toyota Corolla Cross and the Subaru Forester. While both crossover SUVs have their merits, the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross has one huge strength over the 2023 Subaru Forester: a new hybrid model with great gas mileage.

The Toyota Corolla Cross debuted to great fanfare the previous model year, as it combines the styling and brand name recognition of the iconic Corolla sedan with the utility of a crossover SUV. And now, for its second year of production, the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross adds an efficient hybrid model. Given Toyota’s track record for hybrids, the Corolla Cross Hybrid aims to be a big seller.

Conversely, the 2023 Subaru Forester doesn’t offer a hybrid model. All Forester models are fully gas-powered. While Subaru indicated that there will be a hybrid version of the Forester in 2025, right now, fully gas-powered is the only choice.

The biggest attraction of the 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid is its gas mileage, which is higher than the 2023 Subaru Forester. Deriving power from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and three electric motors, the hybrid powertrain in the crossover SUV gets an estimated fuel economy of up to 37 combined mpg.

In comparison, the Forester has an estimated gas mileage of up to 29 combined mpg. With its higher fuel economy, the Corolla Cross Hybrid saves owners a great deal of money at the pump over the long haul. Also, even the fully gas-powered variant of the Corolla Cross has higher gas mileage than the Forester (32 combined mpg).

In addition to the savings on gasoline, another benefit of the high fuel economy of the Corolla Cross is convenience. With its minimal fuel consumption, it requires fewer stops at gas stations compared to the Forester.

Other advantages of the Toyota Corolla Cross over the Subaru Forester

The 2023 Corolla Cross crossover SUV has other advantages over the 2023 Subaru Forester. This includes maneuverability — due to its smaller size, tighter turning circle, and lighter weight. With greater maneuverability, the Corolla Cross is easier to park, back up, and drive through curves and around corners.

Also, entities such as J.D. Power rate the Corolla Cross as more reliable than the Forester. This reliability translates to fewer repairs, helping to lower the cost of ownership. Plus, the Corolla Cross has a free maintenance plan. Good for two years or 25,000 miles, it covers multi-point inspections, oil changes, topping off the fluids, and tire rotations. Conversely, the Forester doesn’t have a free maintenance program.

Also, the 2023 Corolla Cross is cheaper to buy. It has a starting price of $23,060 MSRP, while the 2023 Forester starts at $26,395 MSRP.

For the new model year, the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross adds a new hybrid model with high gas mileage, which gives it a huge strength over the 2023 Subaru Forester. For drivers choosing between the two crossover SUVs, the hybrid model is an important factor to consider.
