2023 Highlander specs: New turbocharged engine, fuel economy, and towing capacity
The gas-engine 2023 Toyota Highlander has a new turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four engine. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it generates 265 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque. The turbocharged engine replaces the 3.5-liter V-6 engine from the 2022 Highlander. While the turbocharged engine has a decrease of 30 hp compared to the V-6 engine, the torque output is 46 lb-ft higher. Also, the new turbocharged engine has a slight improvement in fuel economy over the V-6 (up to 25 vs. 24 combined mpg).
The hybrid powertrain for the 2023 Highlander Hybrid is the same as the 2022 Highlander Hybrid. It combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors, generating a total system output of 243 horsepower, with an estimated gas mileage of 36 combined mpg.
Both the gas-powered Highlander and Highlander Hybrid offer the choice of either a front-wheel drive or an all-wheel drive system. The gas-powered Highlander has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, while the Highlander Hybrid can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
New features for the 2023 Highlander
The 2023 Toyota Highlander offers new features across the trim lineup. This includes two 12.3-inch Multi-Information Display (MID) screens, which are standard for the Limited and Platinum trims. These trims also have newly standard power-folding exterior mirrors, which makes it easier to enter and exit a garage.
Inside the Highlander, the available wireless charger was moved to the instrument panel shelf for more convenient access. Also, the XLE and XSE trims join the Limited and Platinum trims with the hands-free power liftgate.
The 2023 Highlander adds one new hue for exterior paint colors: Cypress. For the cabin, “Harvest Beige and Glazed Caramel interiors now feature Black as the accent color, replacing Noble Brown.”
As detailed earlier, the release date of the new 2023 Toyota Highlander midsize SUV will likely be in Fall 2022. Also, with a starting price of $36,420 MSRP, the 2023 Highlander costs slightly more than the 2022 version.
