Experts are considering the possibility of a complete 2023 Toyota Prius redesign for the next model year. The last major overhaul of this popular small hybrid-electric hatchback was in 2016. That means the current Prius generation is getting old. Even though the Prius is the best hybrid car of 2022, it’s due for a facelift. Currently, there are no official 2023 Prius renderings or spy shots, but a redesign looks pretty likely.

Keep an eye on MotorBiscuit reporting for the latest 2023 Toyota Prius news.

When does the 2023 Toyota Prius come out?

Some sources, including Kelley Blue Book (KBB), have a lot of confidence in the arrival of a 5th generation Prius in 2023. This is one of the best electric cars on the market for drivers on a budget. A new design could take this iconic, yet underpowered and mild, from boring to bold.

Toyota has not yet provided a 2023 Prius release date, but we expect to hear more soon. At this point in the year, a new model would likely not arrive until the spring of 2023.

We don’t have official specifications yet for the 2023 Toyota Prius, but KBB provides an estimated starting price of $26,000. That’s only about $1,000 more than the current 2022 Prius, but it may be accurate.

Going off of that estimate, we can guess for the rest of the models in the new Prius lineup:

  • 2023 Prius L Eco: $26,000
  • 2023 Prius LE: $27,200
  • 2023 Prius XLE: $30,200
  • 2023 Prius Nightshade Edition FWD: $30,400
  • 2023 Prius Limited: $34,200

Even with a small increase, the 2023 Prius should remain one of the cheapest all-wheel drive cars that run on a hybrid powertrain.

2023 Toyota Prius changes and updates

If this compact hybrid hatchback receives a full redesign, we can expect a host of 2023 Toyota Prius changes. These changes will likely have a more significant impact on the hybrid car’s exterior and cabin.

“What should we expect to find in a new and improved Prius? A sportier and more expressive exterior design is a good start, something aligned with the bolder look of the 2022 Prius Prime. This would help set the Prius apart from direct rivals, including the Hyundai Ioniq, and give it a more youthful appeal.”

2023 Toyota Prius specs will likely stay about the same, with some changes. The Corolla Hybrid and classic Prius typically run on the same powertrain, and the 2023 Corolla Hybrid carries over the same 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine.

2023 Toyota Prius mpg ratings haven’t yet been released, but we can expect to see over 50 mpg in the city.

2023 Toyota Prius interior features and design

Performance aside, potential owners are likely most interested in changes to the 2023 Toyota Prius interior. While this comfortable and versatile hatchback offers the most real-world cargo space for its size, the cabin is not very exciting. KBB says that “the control layout in the center of the dashboard—not to mention the tiny gear-lever sprouting from the dash—has been a quirk of this fuel-sipping car since it first arrived roughly 20 years ago.”

“Quirk” is a kind term. The Prius’ interior hasn’t seen a major overhaul in a long time, and it’s long overdue.

Outside, the 2023 Toyota Prius will likely offer the same or similar colors. However, it may add new colors to the Toyota Nightshade Special Edition package, like the new 2023 Camry.

The classic Prius competes against rivals from other brands and its own siblings. The Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid offers more versatility, and the 2023 Corolla Hybrid can see up to 40 mpg on the highway. Honda may also be releasing a Civic Hybrid sedan in the near future.

So, should you consider a current 2022 Prius or wait until the 2023 Toyota Prius? It’s hard to say. The current model year will likely be cheaper and hopefully more readily available. It may also be more consistent and reliable than the 2023 model, which will likely be the very first in the new generation.

However, a fully redesigned new 2023 Prius would likely bring more power, better fuel efficiency, and a better exterior look and feel. The choice is up to you.
