The 2023 Toyota RAV4 brings a lot to the table, and like many other Toyotas, that includes a lot of safety features. Many of these safety features are standard, and some are also advanced driver assistance systems, or ADAS, which improve the safety of the RAV4 even more. Here’s everything you need to know about the safety and ADAS features of the 2023 Toyota RAV4. 

A quick overview of the 2023 Toyota RAV4

Pricing details are currently unknown for the 2023 Toyota RAV4, but it shouldn’t be too different from the 2022 model year. The RAV4 currently starts at about $28,000, and Toyota offers a lot of trims on it. There’s the XLE trim, which starts at about $30,000, and the XLE Premium, which starts at $33,000.

Regarding top trims, the Adventure trim starts at about $35,000, the Limited trim starts at $37,000, and the TRD Off Road trim goes for $38,000. However, there will be a new trim level for the 2023 model year. It’s called the Woodland Edition, and it comes with exterior styling upgrades and some interior improvements. 

In addition to trim level options, the RAV4 will also come with a few engine options. The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder gets 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, but Toyota also offers two hybrid powertrain options. There’s a regular hybrid and a PHEV option. The standard engine gets about 30 mpg combined, while the PHEV option can get 94 MPGe and can go 42 miles on battery-only mode.

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 comes with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 

No matter which trim or engine option you choose, the Toyota RAV4 will be a safe SUV thanks to the fact that it comes with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, or TSS 2.0,  as standard. According to Toyota, TSS 2.0 equips the RAV4 with many standard safety features. For example, TSS 2.0 has a form of forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. This system also includes pedestrian detection capability.

TSS 2.0 also has many common ADAS features, such as lane departure warning and lane keeping assist. It also brings some ADAS that are less common, such as automatic high-beam headlights and a traffic sign detection system. Adaptive cruise control is another ADAS that’s standard on TSS 2.0. 

That said, a few ADAS aren’t standard on TSS 2.0. ADAS, such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking assist, are all options. In the case of front and rear parking assist, it’s an option exclusive to the top trims of the RAV4, which means that folks will need to upgrade to trims like the TRD to acquire them.

Other Toyotas have Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 right now

Although TSS 2.0 adds many smart safety features to the Toyota RAV4 at no additional cost to the owner, it’s not the most advanced safety system that Toyota has right now. Toyota recently debuted the TSS 3.0 system on the bZ4X, which is Toyota’s first modern EV. 

Additionally, according to CarsDirect, TSS 3.0 makes a lot of improvements over TSS 2.0 and TSS 2.5. For example, TSS 2.0’s pedestrian detection system was improved, and, on TSS 3.0, it can detect bicyclists, motorcyclists, and guardrails. Similarly, many of the car’s safety systems were improved in other ways. The safety suite’s cameras and radar have a longer range on TSS 3.0, and the lane recognition system got upgrades that make it smarter than its predecessor.
