The 2023 Toyota Tacoma continues to dominate the midsize truck segment, and it managed to succeed even after a shaky start in terms of sales. There are many reasons why truck shoppers seem to prefer the Taco, and one of those reasons may have to do with the number of options that Toyota offers for the truck. Here’s a look at how the 2023 Toyota Tacoma has more than double the available trims of its rivals.

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma has significantly more trim options than its competitors

After looking at about a dozen trucks on the market right now, U.S. News wrote that the Tacoma has the most trim options in its segment. Currently, Toyota offers 34 trim options for the midsize truck, and that’s almost three times more than the runner-ups. The Ford Ranger and the Nissan Frontier were both tied for second place, as both had 12 trim options. 

The Jeep Gladiator was in third place, as it had 10 trim options. The Honda Ridgeline, which has a unique design for the segment, ended up in last place as it only had a total of four trim options. That being said, while the Tacoma was the leader in its segment for trim options, it was beaten by other trucks in the full-size segment.

The Chevy Silverado had 38 trim options, the Ford F-150 had 39 trim options, and the Toyota Tundra had 42 trim options. The truck with the most trim options overall was the Ram 1500, which had 54 trim options.

Why the 2023 Toyota Tacoma has so many options

The main reason why the Taco, the Tundra, and all the other trucks had so many options largely comes down to the fact that the site is counting every cab and bed configuration as a trim option.

Many trucks have a variety of cab options, with crew cab and regular cab being staples for most trucks. Trucks also tend to have a few bed options, and they often range from a short bed, a regular bed, or a long bed.

Toyota gave the Tacoma an option of a smaller cab with a 6-foot bed, or a larger cab with a 5-foot bed. The site also counted engine options, and Toyota offers two. There’s a standard 2.7-liter four-cylinder and a 3.5-liter V6. Then there are the actual trim levels, and each trim level typically can be customized in terms of their cab, bed, and engine options.

The Japanese auto giant currently offers seven trim levels for the truck, and they range from the standard SR trim to premium trims like the Limited. When all of those different configurations are added up, the Taco ultimately comes out with 34 options.

The pros and cons of the 2023 Toyota Tacoma’s high number of options

Many truck shoppers are familiar with having to choose cab and bed options, so it’s a good thing that Toyota is offering its shoppers with that opportunity. The high number of possible configurations also ultimately means that drivers can customize their truck to their needs. This is good, as it allows the automaker to attract more potential customers.

With that being said, there are some obvious pitfalls to having so many trim options. Car shopping is an already stressful process, and many folks want to simplify that process so that they have less of a headache.

This is part of the reason why some automakers have started simplifying the number of trims and options that their cars have. The Ford Maverick is an example of that, as each truck has the same cab and bed configuration.
