If you’re looking to buy a new Toyota Tacoma, you have plenty of options. This midsize pickup offers seven trims, with higher levels geared toward comfort or performance. Given this truck’s rough-and-tumble reputation, we weren’t surprised to learn which 2023 Toyota Tacoma trim is the most popular. 

Here’s every 2023 Toyota Tacoma trim you can buy

Minus freight costs and taxes, you can get a new 2023 Toyota Tacoma for as little as $28,600 if you purchase the SR trim. The base four-cylinder engine generates a meager 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque, allowing the truck to tow 3,500 pounds. For more power, you can upgrade to a V6 producing 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. With the tow package, Tacoma trims with the V6 can pull 6,400 pounds. 

The Toyota Tacoma SR can be optioned with an Access or Double cab, both of which feature a composite cargo bed with movable cleats. The Double cab has room for five passengers, while the Access cab loses a seat. Fabric upholstery is standard, as is dual-zone climate control if you add the V6. Each 2023 Tacoma trim also has a few advanced safety features and smartphone integration. 

Next is the Toyota Tacoma SR5 trim, starting at $30,390. Its features are basically identical to the SR’s unless it has the V6.

The TRD Sport trim has that powerplant standard, plus a unique hood scoop and a sportier suspension. Every TRD model can also be optioned with a six-speed manual transmission instead of the standard automatic.

Finally, the range-topping TRD Pro is the most expensive 2023 Toyota Tacoma trim, starting at $48,035. In addition to touting a serious suspension lift, it has TRD-tuned Fox shocks and a heavy-duty skid plate. Four-wheel drive and a multi-terrain monitoring system also come standard.

Edmunds data shows most buyers gravitate toward the Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road trim. It provides satisfying standard equipment such as Bilstein shocks, an electronic locking rear differential, and crawl control with off-road turning assistance. 

4WD is still optional at this trim level, though its cost depends on the transmission paired with the V6. With that added, you gain access to the multi-terrain select system. The multi-terrain monitoring system is also available for the Tacoma TRD Off-Road trim. 

Which trim is the best?

The Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road packs plenty of capability at a fair price, which is probably what makes it attractive to buyers. Indeed, Car and Driver reviewers prefer this Tacoma trim. However, Edmunds recommends the SR5, but only if off-roading isn’t a priority. 

If you’re still stumped about which 2023 Toyota Tacoma trim to choose, the redesigned 2024 model might be worth the wait. It will boast a refreshed powertrain lineup, updated tech, and a new cab option. In addition, Toyota will introduce the Trailhunter trim, featuring coil springs and a new shock absorber setup. Also, an integrated air compressor, snorkel, and aluminum upper control arms will be included on top of all the TRD Pro’s features. For drivers more accustomed to casual adventures, the 2024 Tacoma TRD Off-Road should still be available and better than ever.
