Volvo offers a burgeoning lineup of luxury SUVs. They range in size and powertrain, including the Recharge series of EVs. Many Volvo SUVs received updates for the 2023 model year. Here’s an overview of the brand’s latest luxury crossovers.

2023 Volvo XC40

The XC40 is the smallest and most affordable crossover among Volvo SUVs. This luxury subcompact crossover starts at about $36,000. The XC40 has two engine options, and they’re both mild hybrids. The standard is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 194 hp, and folks can upgrade that engine to get 247 hp.

The standard option comes with front-wheel drive, but the more powerful option has all-wheel drive. Despite its small size, the XC40 has a max cargo capacity of about 57.5 cubic feet.

Furthermore, Volvo sells a fully electric version of the XC40 called the XC40 Recharge. It starts at around $53,500. The XC40 Recharge has electric motors that generate a combined 402 hp, and it has a range of about 223 miles. However, it’s similar to the standard XC40 in other ways, as the two Volvo SUVs have the same cargo capacity.

2023 Volvo XC60

The Volvo XC60 competes in the luxury compact crossover segment, making it a larger and more expensive model than the XC40. The XC60 starts at about $43,500, and in terms of powertrain, it’s similar to the XC40 but it’s more potent overall. The standard powertrain in the XC60 is the same as the optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the XC40.

But the XC60 offers a more powerful option. It takes that 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and adds a supercharger. That allows the engine to produce 295 hp. However, the XC60’s plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version boasts the most potent powertrain. This model, called the XC60 Recharge, starts at about $53,500, and its PHEV powertrain gets a combined 455 hp. The PHEV also allows the XC60 to go 32 miles in battery-only mode.

Overall, though, the XC60 is a luxurious and safe crossover. It features plenty of high-end materials in the cabin and has a max cargo capacity of about 63.3 cubic feet across all trims. 

2023 Volvo XC90

Sitting in the luxury midsize crossover segment, the XC90 is the largest and most expensive among Volvo SUVs. It starts at about $56,000 and gives riders third-row seating. That allows the XC90 to carry seven passengers, and shoppers can upgrade the second row to include luxurious captain’s chairs.

Like the other Volvo SUVs, the 2023 XC90 has a powertrain that’s similar to those in the smaller models. It starts with the same 247-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the XC60. And like the XC60, the XC90 gives buyers the option to add a supercharger to boost the power output to 295 hp. 

And similarly, there’s also a PHEV option called the XC90 Recharge. It starts at about $72,000, and its powertrain is the same as the one in the XC60 Recharge. But the XC90 Recharge is larger, so it can go only 29 miles in battery-only mode. However, the XC90 has the most cargo space among Volvo SUVs, topping out at 85.7 cubic feet.

2023 Volvo C40 Recharge

Among Volvo SUVs, the all-electric C40 Recharge sits below the similarly named XC40 in size but above it in starting price. Expect to pay around $55,300 for the base C40 Recharge. This coupe-like five-seater with 49 cubic feet of cargo capacity offers a so-so range of 226 miles. But the dual-motor setup makes this EV “one of the quickest Volvos ever built,” MotorTrend reports.
