The 2024 BMW iX Only Has 1 Big Advantage Over the Tesla Model X
The BMW iX is the iconic German luxury brand’s first dedicated electric SUV. Based on the BMW Vision iNext concept that first debuted at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, the iX is the brand’s flagship electric SUV. It’s an outstanding showcase of technology and daring design while providing all the benefits of electrification.
However, the BMW iX has some tough competition in electric luxury SUVs. One of its chief rivals is a modern-day icon in this class; the Tesla Model X. Let’s look at the pros and cons of these luxury EVs and which one comes out on top.
BMW iX vs. Tesla Model X
The BMW iX and Tesla Model X are both midsize electric luxury SUVs available in two variants. The base model of the BMW iX is the xDrive50 model, starting at $87,100, and the sportier option is the M60 model, beginning at $111,500. The Model X is more affordable. The dual-motor model starts at $79,990, and the tri-motor Plaid model begins at $89,990.
So, how do they compare performance-wise? According to BMW’s estimates, the iX xDrive50 has a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds, and the iX M60 hits 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. According to Tesla, the dual-motor Model X has a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds, and the Model X Plaid flies from 0-60 mph in only 2.5 seconds.
The Tesla also beats the BMW on range. According to EPA estimates, the dual-motor Model X has a maximum range of up to 348 miles, and the Plaid model gets up to 333 miles of range. As for the BMW, the xDrive40 only gets up to 217 miles of range, and the M60 achieves a 296-mile range.
The Tesla Model X also has a significant practical benefit over the BMW iX. The Model X is available with three-row seating, but you can only get the iX with two rows of seats. In terms of unique features, the Model X also boasts Falcon Wing rear doors and an available yoke steering wheel, which you won’t find in a BMW.
The superior coverage of the BMW iX
When you compare the specs and pricing of these two electric luxury SUVs, the Tesla Model X seems like an obvious choice over the BMW iX. However, the BMW does have a significant advantage over the Tesla. While they have similar basic and powertrain warranties, the BMW iX comes with a three-year/36,000-mile complimentary maintenance plan.
According to Edmunds, additional coverage for the iX includes four years of unlimited roadside assistance, a 12-year rust warranty, and two years of free 30-minute fast charging sessions at Electrify America charging stations.
Is the iX or Model X the better luxury EV?
Despite the perks of more robust warranty coverage and two years of free charging sessions, the Tesla Model X is a better buy for most EV shoppers. The longer range, better performance, and more affordable pricing make it a no-brainer. Also, families will appreciate that it’s available with three-row seating.
However, for a counterpoint, the Model X has frequent reports of unreliability and build quality issues, such as those documented by iSeeCars. In that case, the additional coverage of the iX does have its benefits.
