2024 Chevy Silverado EV Towing Tests Don’t Tell the Whole Story
General Motors has been busy putting the Chevrolet Silverado EV through various towing tests. This is great because people want their pickup trucks to be capable. But the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV towing tests are leaving out one crucial piece of information.
Does the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV have a good towing range?
We’re still waiting to learn about how much range the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV loses while towing. General Motors is being quiet about how the 2024 Silverado EV’s charge performs with loads around 7,000 to 10,000 lbs.
The Silverado EV RST can tow up to 10,000 lbs, while the Silverado EV WT or Work Truck maxes out at 8,000 lbs. The Ford F-150 Lightning can tow up to 10,000 lbs, and the Rivian R1T tows up to 11,000 lbs.
So, while the Silverado EV has a similar amount of muscle, it’s not done yet. General Motors hopes to get the towing capacity up to 20,000 lbs.
Being able to tow typical loads for work is great, but we need to know how far it can go. If the Chevy Silverado EV loses range at a rapid rate while towing lighter trailers, then it won’t be any better than the competition.
Is the Chevy Silverado EV good for towing?
Recently, InsideEVs shared that a 2024 Chevy Silverado EV towing test had good results. The Silverado EV hauled a 7,700 lb trailer at multiple speeds, and General Motors engineers claimed that it performed well.
Reportedly, the 2024 Silverado EV provides a smooth ride while towing. It also responds to road conditions and driver feedback in an intuitive manner.
The Silverado EVs with the max towing features get the four-wheel steering system standard to help ease trailer maneuverability. Plus, the First Edition has the Super Cruise semi-autonomous self-driving system with trailering capabilities.
The Silverado EV Work Truck has a dual-motor setup that’s paired with AWD drive to crank out 510 hp and 625 lb-ft of torque. The RST has a similar setup with 664 hp and 780 lb-ft of torque.
We’re waiting to see the WT model’s range, but the RST has an estimated range of 400 miles on a single charge to help its towing distance.
Nicole Kraatz, Chevrolet electric pickup truck Chief Engineer shared that it’s important for full-size pickup truck owners to tow, haul, and do everything a traditional truck can. She believes General Motors has set the bar with an incredible product.
How capable is the Silverado EV?
The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV will power job sites and is available with up to 10 outlets, including two 240-volt ports. It can pump out up to 10 kW of power, which is enough juice to charge another electric truck.
Speaking of charging, the Silverado EV can replenish about 100 miles of range in roughly 10 minutes. The front trunk or frunk should provide space for the charging cables and other tools. Also, the bed can stow items up to 10 feet long. It can carry a payload of up to 1,300 lbs.
All of these stats seem good on paper, but the 2024 Silverado EV hasn’t been put to the test. We need to see its range in action to see if it can deliver on all of its promises.
