While Rivian and Ford are now delivering their electric pickup trucks, Chevy is still developing the new 2024 Chevy Silverado EV truck. It looks like the Chevy is trailing other domestic manufacturers in developing its truck, and that delay is likely contributing to far fewer pre-orders than Ford is seeing for the new F-150 Lightning. But orders for the Chevy are trailing by quite a bit compared to other EV trucks, even if it’s a truck worth waiting for.

Details on the Silverado EV were scarce

GM was a bit late to the EV truck game with the Silverado. While it was pushing the GMC Hummer SUV and Chevy Bolt, Ford was continuously releasing more and more about the new F-150 Lightning. It makes sense that nobody is going to put down money, even if it’s refundable if there’s no information. That’s changing now, and Chevy has published some of its expected specs for the new truck.

30% fewer people are ordering a Chevy EV truck

According to a survey from Recurrent Auto, about 140,000 people have paid $100 to reserve a new 2024 Chevy Silverado EV truck. That’s a ton of people, for sure, who have raised their hand to say “I want an electric Silverado.” That number is higher than some others, like the Rivian, for which 90,000 people put down a refundable $1,000 deposit and the 65,000 that signed up for Hummer SUV. But those trucks are double, or even triple, the price of the 2024 Chevy EV truck.

However, those numbers pale in comparison to the estimated 1.27 million people who have placed a $100 order for a Tesla Cybertruck that has been repeatedly delayed. More than 200,000 put down $100 for a new Ford F-150 Lightning.

Now that we know more about the Silverado EV, will it be more competitive?

We now know more about the 2024 all-electric Chevrolet Silverado. GM estimates a 400-mile range. It should have fast charging, off-board power for tools, and a towing capacity of 10,000 pounds. Chevy says it will pack 664 horsepower and more than 780 lb.-ft. of torque, which should get it to 60 miles per hour in less than 4.5 seconds. It will seat five. Also, the Silverado will have a new four-wheel-drive system that will allow each wheel to not only power the truck, but four-wheel steering, too.

It will be available in the fall of 2023. While the GMC Hummer EV has the new WTF, or Watts to Freedom mode for ultra-fast acceleration, the Silverado will instead have WOW, or Wide Open Watts mode. Like Ford, Chevy is also targeting the work truck market with a 510-horsepower WT model. The base model will start at $39,900, and it will come in RST, Trail Boss, and other trim levels.

Could the Ram EV truck be in the same boat?

Ram is planning a sleek new truck, but we don’t know a lot about it yet. We can expect it to have similar capability to the 2-24 Chevy Silverado EV, Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T. That means it should have more than 600 horsepower, be able to tow 10,000 pounds, have four-wheel drive as an option, and have a 400-mile range. Ram will likely push the styling envelope more than Chevy or Ford, and the few images we have show a truck that looks like an EV truck. However, one of the selling points for the Ford F-150 Lightning is that it looks like an F-150, not an EV.
