The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV Is Adding a Powerful New Feature
AM General began selling a civilian version of the military M998 Humvee, known as the Hummer, to the public in 1992. Celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger drove these militaristic-looking SUVs on the streets of Hollywood, and soon everyone wanted one. Three decades later, the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV is drastically different, and it’s been a long time in the making.
Though General Motors announced the Hummer EV truck and SUV in 2021, the SUV version only went into production in January 2023. Here we’ll discuss details about this electric vehicle, including a powerful new feature.
The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV has 4 trim levels, and they’re all expensive
Here’s a breakdown of the 2024 Hummer EV SUV pricing and trims. GMC starts the EV2 base model at $80,395 and the EV2X at $90,395. Starting prices increase to $100,395 for the EV3X and $105,595 for the range-topping Edition 1.
In addition, buyers can add off-road options such as steps, larger tries, and upgraded lights for an upcharge. For instance, the Hummer EV SUV Extreme Off-Road Package brings several upgrades. They include 18-inch black aluminum wheels with machined accents and a matching full-size spare. This package costs $9,995 to add to the EV2X and EV3X and $5,000 to add to Edition 1.
The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV introduces a powerful new feature
The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV boasts a 6.0-kW “Power Station” generator. Although it isn’t technically a generator, it can be used as a backup power source. It reverses the charging process by taking DC energy from the battery, converting it back to AC, and sending it to the charge port. This feature can power accessories and even other electric vehicles.
GMC says all Hummer EVs equipped with the optional Power Station will have the appropriate connectors to charge other electric cars. As a result, other off-road EV drivers could be rescued by a friendly Hummer, making it the “jump-start” of the future.
Additional highlights of the new electric Hummer
The GMC Hummer EV SUV packs two or three electric motors, depending on the trim. The EV2 and EV2X have a dual-motor setup making about 625 hp and 7,400 lb-ft of torque. The EV3X and the Edition 1 have three motors (one up front and two in the back), harnessing 830 hp and 11,500 lb-ft of torque.
The SUV also boasts off-road goodies from the truck version, including four-wheel steering with CrabWalk and an adjustable air suspension with Extract mode that can raise the vehicle six inches. That combines with the optional Extreme Off-Road package. In addition to 18-inch wheels on 35-inch all-terrain tires, this package brings extra underbody protection, low-mounted cameras for better visibility over rough terrain, enhanced axles with heavy-duty components, a locking front differential, and rear motors that can electronically mimic a locked differential.
Those features make the GMC Hummer EV SUV an off-roader’s dream machine.
As for driving range, the Hummer benefits from GM’s Ultium battery technology, making the new EV more eco-friendly than its distant cousins.
The EV2 base model features a standard 400-volt electrical system, but it’s also available with the 800-volt system that’s standard on the other trims. It has a massive 170.0-kWh battery pack, providing about 250 miles of highway driving.
The latest Hummer generation will be more fuel-efficient but no less of an off-roading beast than its predecessors.
