2024 GMC Sierra AT4X Just Got a Killer New Engine Option
The 2022 GMC Sierra just got a major refresh just last year. The classic pickup truck not only got a new exterior but also saw the interior get a fresh update too. If that wasn’t enough, GMC also added the AT4X and Denali Ultimate trims to the Sierra line. Within a year, GMC announces that the 2024 GMC Sierra AT4X will get a new engine option, the 3.0-liter Duramax Diesel.
GMC Sierra AT4X is getting a new diesel engine option
The 3.0-liter Duramax diesel engine will now not only be available for the 2024 GMC Sierra AT4X, but it will also be standard. This is pretty big news considering when the off-road-focused AT4X came out; it only had the 420-hp 6.2-liter V8. While this engine is pretty sweet, many GMC customers hoped for a diesel option. According to MotorTrend, GM told AT4X fans that it couldn’t happen because of interference between the engine’s charge-air cooler and the truck’s front bash plate. However, thanks to the 2022 AT4 guinea pig, GM figured it out and is now standard on the AT4X and available for every other trim except the base Sierra Pro.
Is the GMC 3.0-liter Duramax a good diesel engine?
The 3.0-liter turbodiesel Duramax was just updated this year. In preparation for getting to be the standard issues powerplant for the AT4X, GM gave it new steel pistons, a retuned turbo compressor, new fuel injectors, and improved thermal management features. GM managed to squeeze 10% more horsepower and a 7% increase in torque from the previous version. This makes the current version of the 3.0-liter Duramax I-6 turbodiesel make 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque. Along with the boost in power and torque, the AT4X will also get improved gas mileage.
There are still more new engine options for the GMC Sierra AT4X
If you are any kind of automotive fan, “Turbo High-Output” is a string of words you’ll probably always be pumped to hear. Along with the 3.0-liter diesel engine, GM also reworked the cool little 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. MotorTrend reports that, along with the 2022 Sierra refresh announcement, GM also mentioned it would be upping the torque on the 2.7-liter turbo. Gainly nearly 100 lb-ft of torque, the 2.7-liter went from 348 lb-ft to 430 lb-ft and had its name changed to “Turbo High-Output.”
However, for the 2024 model, the name of the little engine will change again to the arguably less-cool “TubroMax.” The TurboMax will be the only engine option for the 2023 GMC Canyon.
The GMC Sierra won’t stop changing
Along with all this fun engine stuff, the Sierra is also getting a whole host of updates, add-ons, and changes. One of the most exciting is the new paint colors; Downpour Metallic and Thunderstorm Gray. GMC still hasn’t provided photos of these new colors, but don’t worry, it will.
