GM has revealed its slate of full-size electric trucks planned for launch in 2024. Its recent debut of the GMC Sierra Denali EV completes the triumvirate of Hummer, Chevrolet, and GMC EVs. But the GMC Sierra Denali EV is confusing on different fronts. Is it just a different-looking GMC Hummer for the same price?

How similar are the GMC Sierra and Hummer prices?

Disregarding the Edition 1 Hummer, which is already sold out, the numbers for both GMC EVs match daily closely, including prices. The next trim below Edition 1 is the EV3X. Its MSRP is right at $100,000, while the Denali Edition 1 comes with a $107,000 sticker. Granted, there will be some differences between the lower-trim Hummer and a loaded Sierra EV. But once you get to six digits, the difference is almost an accounting error.

When it comes to power, the three-motor Hummer EV3 cranks out 800 hp and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. The Sierra Denali EV won’t beat that number. Packing two electric motors, it ends up producing 754 hp with 785 lb-ft of torque. But both feature several power modes, though no WTF mode for the Sierra EV.

How do the range and towing capacity compare?

The estimated range for the Hummer is a commendable 300 miles, while the Sierra EV gets 100 miles more. Fast charging is the same at 350 kWh, and a 10-minute fast charge nets both another 100 miles range. But with the massive battery necessary for the Hummer, home charging will undoubtedly take longer.

Towing capacity is another important part of truck owning, though we question whether Hummer and Sierra EV buyers will be doing much of that. With the Hummer, you can haul up to 7,500 lbs. If you’re debating the two EVs based on this metric, the Sierra EV beats the Hummer with a  hauling capacity of 9,500 lbs.

How similar are the two GMC truck interiors?

With each, there is a give and take of specs, like ground clearance. The Sierra EV won’t come with the Hummer’s Extract Mode so 15.9 inches of ground clearance isn’t happening with the Sierra EV. Its adaptive suspension only adjusts by two inches up or down.

Inside, both feature an 11-inch instrument display. But the Sierra EV’s infotainment screen is 16.8 inches diagonally, while the Hummer’s 13.4-inch touchscreen doesn’t compare. As for infotainment functions, both run the same Google software. The same goes for safety software.

As for the interior designs, they have enough differences to make it more of a subjective choice only you can decide. We would say, however, that the Sierra’s is a bit more traditional, while the Hummer has a more hard-edged horizontal theme. We’d almost say it’s retro-1980s, but don’t judge us if you don’t.

The reality is that for the foreseeable future, you won’t touch a GMC Hummer EV for anything less than $200,000. A waiting list that looks to run forever, and the low, low production numbers guarantee that. Should the GMC Sierra Denali EV see better production numbers, it might be sold close to its MSRP. That would put it way ahead of the Hummer for those that can do without a WTF Mode.
