Honda is stepping into the future with a clean foot as it plans to have an entirely electric lineup by 2040. The Japanese automaker is now stepping up its fuel-saving measures with hybridized versions of its popular nameplates. The 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid recently hit the market with a new powertrain, and soon, the 2024 Honda Civic Hybrid will enter the lineup. It, too, will have a dual-motor setup, which should make it more fuel-efficient than before.

It will also likely make it more expensive, considering the current-model Civic starts at around $25,000. If we had to guess, the new Civic Hybrid could start at around $28,000, which could be out of reach for some shoppers. In that case, here are four good alternatives on the used market that carry a lower price tag.

1. 2019 Honda Insight

The 2019 Honda Insight was the third coming of the brand’s popular hybrid vehicle. The first-generation Insight was the little two-door hatchback that started it all, and the second-gen Insight looked like a Prius copy from Wish. However, Honda really stepped it up with the third-generation model, which offered a sedan body style and super-efficient powertrain.

Under the Insight’s hood is a 1.5-liter powertrain with a dual-motor hybrid system. It produces a respectable 151 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque while obtaining an EPA-estimated 55 mpg in the city and 49 mpg on the highway. Stepping up to the top-trim Touring decreases the mpg rating to 51/45, respectively. But that’s still nothing to sneeze at.

2. 2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid

The 2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid was the fuel-saving version of the American automaker’s popular sedan. Along with a spacious cabin for up to five passengers, the Fusion Hybrid offered plenty of tech-savvy features and a fuel-efficient drivetrain. Some of the most notable features found across all four of its trim levels include heated seats and steering wheel, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, remote start, and plenty of safety features.

Regarding the powertrain, every Ford Fusion trim was powered by a 188-hp gas/electric setup that garnered an EPA-estimated 43 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway.

3. 2015 Honda Civic Hybrid

If you don’t think you’ll be able to afford the 2024 Honda Civic Hybrid, the 2015 model year might be more your speed. Although it won’t have the same fancy powertrain or styling, the 2015 Civic Hybrid has a lot to offer. It has a 7-inch touchscreen with phone integration, a blind spot camera display, and plenty of room for five.

Under its hood is a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that’s mated to an electric motor. Combined, the setup puts out 110 hp and 127 lb-ft of torque. The EPA estimates that it can get up to 44 mpg in the city and 47 mpg on the highway, but don’t expect the car to be quick. The editors at Edmunds were able to get the car up to 60 mph from a stop in 10 seconds, which is pretty slow.

4. 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

The 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid is like a light version of the Prius. It uses a four-cylinder engine that’s mated to a duo of electric motors for a smooth and efficient driving experience. It should be no surprise that it shares this powertrain with the Prius. That said, you can bet that it gets stellar fuel economy numbers. The EPA rates this version of the Corolla at 53 mpg in the city and 52 mpg on the highway, which could trump the forthcoming Civic Hybrid – but we’ll see.
