The 2024 Honda Prologue Could Exceed Expectations Based on New GM EVs
The 2024 Honda Prologue will be Honda’s first-ever mass-produced small electric SUV for North America. The automaker lags behind the competition as several major automakers roll out new small electric SUV nameplates. Models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E have already made huge impacts. Here’s why the long-awaited Honda Prologue could exceed expectations.
GM EVs hint at what the 2024 Honda Prologue could be like
Creating successful small SUV nameplates is proving to be trickier than many automakers anticipated. As a result, some of the industry’s biggest brands are collaborating to simplify the process. They are working together to create similar platforms.
Such was the case with the Toyota bZ4X and the Subaru Solterra. They are different small electric SUVs, but similar genes are baked into their design language. These EVs are second cousins.
General Motors has teased the 2024 Chevy Equinox EV. The Prologue is likely to share a platform with the Equinox EV. General Motors was initially thought to be the perfect partner for Honda because of the success of the Chevy Bolt EV.
The Chevy Bolt EV became the subject of one of GM’s largest recalls ever after battery fire issues. So, the future of the Honda Prologue didn’t seem too bright…until now. The Chevy Bolt EV is back on track, and it has been given an incredibly affordable starting price along with the Chevy Bolt EUV electric subcompact SUV. The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV starts at just $25,600. The 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV starts at $27,200.
What we know about the Honda Prologue thus far
The 2024 Honda Prologue is the first of many new Honda electric vehicles. Honda calls the Prologue “adventure-ready” hinting at mild off-roading prowess. This could come in the form of good approach and departure angles or an off-roading trim level.
The electric SUV has 102.6 cubic feet of cabin space. It will have 21-inch wheels. A panoramic roof will either be optional or standard.
Car and Driver estimates that the Prologue will start at around $45,000. The automotive publication believes it will get between 250-320 miles of driving range between different trim levels.
The 2023 Toyota bZ4X starts at $42,000. Since the Prologue is a rival, it’s likely to have a starting price within the same ballpark. The video above shows two different Prologue colors. Honda’s electric SUV has a sleek futuristic exterior.
Will the 2024 Honda Prologue be reliable?
The 2024 Honda Prologue will be built on a variation of the General Motors Ultium platform. This platform will be used in the Chevy Silverado EV, Chevy Equinox EV, Chevy Blazer EV, Cadillac Celestiq, and GMC Sierra EV.
The benefit of the Ultium platform being used so often is that Honda can learn from GM recalls. The Bolt EV and Bolt EUV should be as reliable as ever following the Bolt EV recall. So, there’s no telling whether or not the Honda Prologue will be reliable, but Honda is likely to avoid similar battery fire issues like the plague if the brand wants to make a splash in the small electric SUV segment.
