2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+: Off-Road Over Luxury SUV
When one thinks of Lexus, it’s all about luxury all day long. But this 2024 Lexus GX 550, which it calls Overtrail+, adds off-roading to that equation. The Lexus Associated Accessory Product group brings the Overtrail+ to us. The end result shows that Lexus may want to toughen up its reputation as a luxury SUV manufacturer only with the Overtrail+. After all, it is replacing its “Sophisticated Utility Vehicle” advertising back to a Sport Utility Vehicle.
A smattering of Pelican cargo cases and rotoPax containers is the first indication this isn’t for hauling the kiddies. Holding them in place is a Prinsu roof rack with accessory panels covering the rear windows. Showing it can get out of any trouble it might encounter is a DMOS shovel and ARB recovery boards held by the roof rack.
What are some of the changes in the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+?
Lexus shot the Overtrail+ in “earth” and soft black two-tone paint. The 33-inch off-road tires feature black 18-inch alloy wheels. Black continues as the color of choice for the wheel surrounds, rock rails, and grille. The brush guard deviates with a silver finish. Inside, there is a Lexus branded on-board tire compressor, and even the rock rails feature the branding.
Lexus opting not to modify its twin-turbo 3.4-liter engine signifies that the 349 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque are more than adequate for any trail trek. It replaces the GX 460 4.6-liter V8 while offering more power and torque. Shifting chores come from the stock 10-speed automatic transmission.
When is the Lexus 2024 GX 550 coming out?
The GX 550 is all-new for 2024. That makes this off-roader apropos for the concept‘s showing at the 2023 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. But it is too new to put a price tag onto, as there are no pricing numbers from the Japanese automaker. In fact, Lexus has not given a date when the GX 550 will be available, though you can place an order for yours now.
This new SUV replaces the current GX 460. There is a new Multi-terrain Select or Crawl Control feature, according to Lexus. Panoramic View with Multi-Terrain Monitor is another new addition. And Lexus is promising a hybrid version about a year after first deliveries hit dealer’s lots.
What you can’t order is the Overtrail+ you see here. Lexus says it is only a showcase for what enthusiasts could do to their own GX 550. But we would expect that were it to make this an option, it would be very popular. But knowing what aftermarket packages (which is what the SEMA Show is really all about) it takes to do your own means you could be seeing them sometime in the future.
