The 2024 Mazda CX-90 Could Pack a Powerful Punch
We’re still waiting to learn more about the Mazda CX-90, which doesn’t mean we can’t speculate. There are plenty of exciting clues to rev your engine that are floating around. Plus, we can expect the 2024 Mazda CX-90 to deliver a thrilling amount of power.
What engines will the 2024 Mazda CX-90 have?
The engine options for the 2024 Mazda CX-90 haven’t been released, but can take a look at what the 2023 Mazda CX-60 is getting. While the CX-60 isn’t coming to America, its larger siblings, like the CX-70 and CX-90, are, so they could share a few parts.
According to Car and Driver, it’s safe to expect a new inline-six engine and a hybrid option. Plus, all-wheel drive could come standard.
In Australia, the 2023 CX-60 kicks things off with a 3.3-liter turbocharged straight-six gas engine that churns out 280 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. This is a solid amount of standard power.
Next up, is a 3.3-liter straight-six turbo diesel engine that’s paired with a mild 48-volt hybrid system. This setup generates 251 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque. It probably gets a respectable fuel economy too.
Then the top-spec 2.5-liter four-cylinder Skyactiv-G engine comes in with a 17.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack to produce 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. It could be a plug-in hybrid model with up to 39 miles of electric range.
These figures could be different for the Mazda CX-90 as it’s expected to be a larger vehicle. It could be heavier too. But its main rival is the Kia Telluride, which has a 3.8-liter V6 engine that cranks out 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque.
What else do we know about the 2024 CX-90?
Rumors suggest that the 2024 Mazda CX-90 will ride on Mazda’s new platform, and the inline-six engine will sit longitudinally. It will be Mazda’s first SUV in the United States that rides on the longitudinal-engine platform, and that’s powered by an inline-six.
The Mazda CX-60 rides on the same rear-wheel-drive platform designed for large SUVs. The Mazda CX-70 will probably be one of five new SUVs that will also ride on this platform.
It has a double wishbone suspension in the front and an independent suspension in the rear. Along with providing an athletic yet comfortable ride, the setup leaves spaces on both sides of the engine.
The PHEV engine could be mounted with an electric motor and a multi-clutch plate that connects it to the new eight-speed automatic transmission. Reportedly the Mazda CX-60 is the fastest production Mazda SUV and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds.
How much will the CX-90 tow?
The official towing figure for the 2024 Mazda CX-90 hasn’t been released. However, the Mazda CX-60 can tow up to 5,500, which is more than expected. The CX-90 could tow more. Also, the Kia Telluride X-Pro can tow up to 5,500 lbs.
We can speculate that the new Mazda SUV will be equipped with driving modes for Normal, Sport, Off-Road, and Towing. The hybrids could have an additional Eco or EV mode.
The CX-60 is also significantly wider and longer than the CX-5. The CX-90 is expected to be the largest of them all! It will replace the Mazda CX-9 with more passenger and cargo space.
