The 2024 Mazda CX-90 Delivers on Being More Efficient
As the days tick closer to January, were getting more and more clues about the upcoming Mazda CX-90. This three-row SUV is coming to fight the Kia Telluride and Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Plus, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 has an advantage with a PHEV powertrain.
2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV: What we know so far
Did you know that the 2024 Mazda CX-90 and Thor have something in common? They both have electric power. While Thor uses his powers to save the world, the Mazda CX-90 PHEV will help you save at the pump.
But first, what exactly is a PHEV? It’s a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. This means it runs on gas and electricity. Typically PHEV models have an electric range that doesn’t use gas. Some options use a blend of energy and gas to improve fuel economy.
Also, if they run out of charge, don’t worry. These vehicles can run on gas only too. Typically, they can be charged overnight.
The CX-90 PHEV is currently a mystery. Mazda shared that it will be its first PHEV vehicle released in the United States. It will maintain the responsiveness, performance, and driving dynamics that Mazda is known for.
The all-new e-Skyactiv powertrain is specifically tuned for the North American market. It will provide drivers with the best of both worlds in terms of efficiency and performance.
How much power will the CX-90 have?
We might not know how much power the 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV will have until it debuts in January. We don’t mean to stress you out, but that’s coming soon. It’ll be here right after the holidays, which we need to start preparing for!
Anyways, we can still speculate about it based on clues. The 2024 CX-90 will ride on a new longitudinal platform reserved for large vehicles, such as options with three rows.
It comes with a new inline-six engine that will sit longitudinally. It could share options with the Mazda CX-60. In other countries, the Mazda CX-60 PHEV cranks out 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid setup is assisted by 48 volts.
Because the CX-90 will be larger and heavier, it could have less power. However, it could be tuned differently to provide more muscle over here in the states.
The CX-60 PHEV has an estimated electric range of up to 39 miles, which is excellent. That’s more than the average person drives daily. The CX-90 could have a reduced range if it has a sportier performance.
Is the CX-90 replacing the CX-9?

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is expected to replace the aging Mazda CX-9 in America. While it’s respected as the largest and an incredibly luxurious three-row vehicle, it doesn’t have enough space.
The roofline is low, and the third-row seats are cramped. It lacks cargo room too. The CX-90 is coming with a taller profile and boxier shape to solve these issues.
Also, the CX-9 has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The CX-90 will probably have multiple engine options and a little more muscle.
The CX-9 gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and up to 26 mpg on the highway, which could be better. Perhaps the CX-90 Hybrid and PHEV will do better on gas. Stay tuned for the latest updates.
