One of the highlights of the CX-90 is the interior detail. Mazda’s quilted Nappa leather seats in tan upgraded the cabin throughout. Both rows offer heated seats, but the air-conditioned front seats were an excellent addition. It was easy to live with the newest Mazda SUV, thanks to the thoughtfully designed features and details throughout.
Is the 2024 Mazda CX-90 a luxury SUV?
Technically, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 is a three-row or midsize SUV, but many features give it a luxury SUV vibe. For instance, every trim level gets all-wheel drive for better traction. It can seat up to eight passengers comfortably, but captain’s chairs are available in the second row if you need fewer seats. Our test vehicle only had six seats, which made the third row extra comfortable.
Living with the three-row SUV would be easy, especially with the captain’s chairs. This made getting in and out of the third row a breeze. Mazda equipped this trim level with a hands-free power liftgate; it was super helpful for opening the back door while your hands were full, and it worked well when we tested it.
The Mazda SUV uses a new Active Driving Display to show important information like speed and gasoline levels. Thanks to the long list of standard safety systems, it also displayed information of that nature. The Lane Keep Assist and Blind-Spot Assist systems worked well without being too intrusive. Our test vehicle also had Traffic Sign Recognition, which displayed road speeds and other signage.
How much horsepower does a 2024 Mazda CX-90 have?
The 2024 Mazda SUV has between 280 and 340 horsepower, depending on a few things. Mazda offers three different engine choices for the CX-90, ranging from the e-Skyactiv G 3.3L Turbo engine to the e-Skyactiv G 3.3L inline-six turbo. There is also a plug-in hybrid option in the CX-90 PHEV, which gets an electric motor mated to a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. The CX-90 PHEV gets 323 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque with premium fuel.
Mazda’s 3.3L inline-six comes standard on the CX-90 3.3 Turbo models with 280 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque using regular gas. This returns an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 24 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. On the 3.3 Turbo S models, the 3.3L inline-six gets 340 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque when using premium fuel. That returns an EPA-estimated 23 mpg city, 28 mpg highway.
During testing, our Mazda CX-90 got similar numbers to what was advertised. The test route has more city driving than highway, and the air conditioning was working overtime in the Florida heat. Still, the fuel economy numbers seemed accurate enough. While the competition might be tough for this Mazda SUV, the CX-90 is better equipped than some more expensive options.
