The 2024 Mazda CX-90 Solves Every Mazda CX-9 Issue
We’re huge fans of the Mazda CX-9, but it falls short in crucial areas that the Mazda CX-90 makes up for. While we will be sad to see the CX-9 go, we’re ready to get behind the wheel of the larger 2024 Mazda CX-90.
Is the 2024 Mazda CX-90 better than the Mazda CX-9?
We firmly believe that both the 2023 Mazda CX-9 and 2024 Mazda CX-90 are excellent three-row SUVs to consider, but the CX-90 does have a few advantages that are impossible to ignore.
For example, the 2024 CX-90 has more space in each row for passengers. Some taller folks struggle in the front of the CX-9 because the roof is a little low. Also, the second row could use more leg space, and the third row is reserved for smaller children.
Now taller people can easily fit in the front of the CX-90, and there is enough room for the average-sized adult in the second row. The third row is still a bit tight, but it’s big enough for older children to enjoy.
The exact cargo space dimensions for the CX-90 haven’t been released, but buyers should expect more cargo space for family trips. The CX-9 only has 14.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 38.2 cubes behind the second row, and 71.2 cubic feet overall.
The 2024 CX-90 is more efficient
The 2023 Mazda CX-9 is smooth, fast, and comfortable. The standard turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine cranks out 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.1 seconds.
That’s pretty good! Also, it gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and up to 26 mpg on the highway. That’s not terrible, but it could be better.
With the 2024 Mazda CX-90, you get the new e-Syactiv G engine. It’s a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine that’s paired with an electric motor to generate 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.
CarBuzz shared that the motor is placed between the engine and transmission to provide a smooth power delivery and more efficiency.
You can upgrade to the e-Skyactiv PHEV powertrain for a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that generate 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. It’s expected to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in roughly 5.7 seconds.
Also, the smaller Mazda CX-60 PHEV has an all-electric range of 39 miles. The larger CX-90 could have a reduced range, but it will still be much more efficient than the CX-9. It doesn’t have a hybrid or PHEV powertrain.
The Mazda CX-90 is smarter
While the 2023 Mazda CX-9 has plenty of modern tech, it was starting to show its age compared to well-equipped rivals like the Kia Telluride. The 2024 Mazda CX-90 has a few advancements to get excited about.
For example, if you don’t want to use the rotary dial system to control the infotainment system, then use wireless Apple CarPlay for the touchscreen function. The 12.9-inch infotainment display features updated graphics and is paired with an upgraded digital gauge cluster.
New features include the See-Through View monitor to simplify parking. Plus, radar adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and smart brake support are standard.
There are plenty of benefits with the CX-9 to enjoy. However, the CX-90 has more space for passengers and cargo, is sportier with better fuel economy, and has more tech.
