The base CX-90 is the CX-90 3.3 Turbo Select, while the fully loaded CX-90 is the CX-90 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus. All of the trim levels feel a little more luxurious than you might expect from Mazda. The interior uses premium materials, and the seats are highly comfortable, making for a good everyday vehicle. I enjoyed the interior a lot more than anticipated. It looked very high-end, and the color stands out in a crowd.

Horsepower varies among the trims, but the base model CX-90 3.3 Turbo gets 280 horsepower. Up from there, the CX-90 3.3 Turbo S gets 340 horsepower. The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is actually one of the most fuel-efficient midsize SUVs on the market right now, according to U.S. News. However, since Mazda offers so many engine choices with the CX-90, not all are at the top of the list. For the CX-90 3.3 Turbo with the turbo-inline six engine and 280 horsepower, you’ll get 24 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.
That drops to 23 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway for the more potent engine with 340 horsepower. However, it is nice that Mazda offers the least expensive models with the most fuel efficiency, so shoppers get the best of both worlds without selecting a higher trim level.
Mazda suggests using premium fuel with the CX-90 3.3 Turbo S and PHEV models to get the most power. With the 3.3 Turbo model, drivers can use regular fuel. This version uses a four-cylinder engine and an electric motor for 323 horsepower. It also gets 369 pound-feet of torque, which helps move the midsize SUV around town quickly and efficiently. The plug-in hybrid model does have a higher starting price of $47,445, but it could be a good option for those who drive a lot.
As more 2024 model year vehicles hit the dealerships, the CX-90 could be joined by many more midsize SUVs hitting 24 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. However, that is a welcome change for the midsize segment. Some of these SUVs are still only getting 16 mpg city and 19 mpg highway (sorry, Toyota 4Runner).
