2024 Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV First Drive: This Egg-Shaped EV Goes Fast In Style
America is obsessed with SUVs and trucks, making it tough for automakers to appease everyone. For example, some drivers may want a lot of space and tech features in their SUV to happily transport their family from point A to B. Other drivers may focus more on power and handling dynamics to get the same job done.
For the latter half, we recommend the 2024 Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV. It’s an all-electric SUV based on the EQE sedan that provides plenty of power, style, and comfort. I’m spending the week with it, and so far, I like how it moves.
It’s hard not to fall in love with the 2024 Mercedes-AMG EQE’s sense of style
I’ll admit that at first glance, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV doesn’t look like a car that costs over $100,000. Its egg-shaped silhouette and rounded edges make it look a little bland compared to competitors from Audi and BMW. There’s still plenty of attention to detail on the car’s exterior. For example, there are little Mercedes emblems everywhere, LED headlights that give a laser light show when the car is turned off, and AMG badges to ensure you know what you’re driving.
However, sit inside of it, and you’ll see where all of the money went.
Once inside the Mercedes-AMG EQE, I was blown away by the Neva Gray and Biscay Blue Nappa leather interior. The color combination suits the car’s white exterior paint job well, and it made me feel like I was sitting in a luxurious car. I really liked the carbon fiber trim pieces and soft-touch points on the dash and door panels as well. It’s hard to argue with Mercedes’s craftsmanship.
Of course, there’s a Hyperscreen
It seems like Mercedes-Benz has been sneaking its ultra-high-tech Hyperscreen into many of its cars, and the EQE SUV is no exception. The 56-inch piece of glass is separated into three different screens for the driver information, infotainment, and passenger infotainment system. It looks daunting, but it’s easy to use once you figure out all the menus.
There are plenty of LED lights to keep the occupants starry-eyed at nighttime. My favorite setting is “Miami Sunset,” which turns the car’s interior into a Vice City-themed environment when the sun goes down.
Let’s not forget the Energizing air control plus system, which integrates an air freshener with the car’s AC system. Don’t worry; that freshener only costs $100 at your local dealership when it runs out. But it smells really good, regardless.
The Mercedes-AMG EQE goes fast when you need it to
Lastly, I’m thoroughly impressed by the Mercedes-AMG EQE’s power. The car’s dual-motor system emits a whopping 617 hp and 701 lb-ft of torque, which scoots the heavy SUV up to 60 mph in around 3.4 seconds when the RACE Start feature is activated. That feature unlocks some extra ponies for a total of 677.
That’s a ton of power for an SUV, but hey, some drivers like their family haulers to have plenty of power and grip. The AMG EQE takes care of that department by supplementing its power with an adaptive suspension with different drive modes and carbon ceramic brakes.
Is all of this performance overkill for the street? Yes. But it sure is impressive, making this German EV a standout among the rest. Press the accelerator, and the EQE SUV launches bat out of hell. The power pushes everyone back in the seats as the speed builds effortlessly.
It’s totally unnecessary, but it’s a lot of fun. For the drivers that want power, handling, and tech features to comfortably get them from point A to B, the Mercedes-AMG EQE has it all.
