The 2024 Mitsubishi Triton Needs More Muscle to Compete
Truck enthusiasts are going wild because the new Mitsubishi Triton just dropped. We’re super excited to see Mitsubishi attempt to reclaim its fame as a dominant truck brand, but it’s not in America. Also, the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton might be playing catch up.
How much power does the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton have?
The 2024 Mitsubishi Triton has a standard 2.4-liter inline-four turbo diesel engine with three different output levels. It starts with 148 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque. You can upgrade to 181 hp and 316 lb-ft of torque and maxes out at 201 hp and 347 lb-ft of torque.
American rivals, like the 2024 Ford Ranger, start with 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The Ranger Raptor maxes out at 405 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque.
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma begins with 228 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. The I-Force MAX engine turns things up to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. Don’t forget about the 2023 Nissan Frontier with its standard 310 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque.
While the Mitsubishi Triton has plenty of torque, it lags behind in horsepower. Also, while the turbodiesel engine is exciting, it might not be available in America due to higher emission standards.
So, theoretically, if this truck did come to America, then it would need a different engine option. We could see sharing parts with the Nissan Frontier or gaining powertrain options from the Mitsubishi Outlander.
But the Triton does have an impressive towing capacity of about 7,700 lbs. The Ford Ranger can tow up to 7,500 lbs.
Is the 2024 Triton redesigned?
Yes, the 2024 Mistubishi Trition kicks off the sixth generation with the first redesign since 2015. Along with a new turbocharged diesel engine, it gained some attractive modern features to spice things up.
The engine can be paired with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, which is exciting. Only the Jeep Gladiator and Toyota Tacoma offer a manual transmission in the United States.
But the six-speed automatic transmission may seem dated as most trucks have moved to a nine or 10-speed automatic setup.
It rides on a new ladder frame with 60% increased torsional rigidity and a new suspension. Mitsubishi Motors released that the cross-section area is increased by 65% and 40% bending rigidity. It should improve comfort on the pavement.
Driving modes include Eco, Normal, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock. It features 4x4H, 4x4L, a locking rear differential, and a limited-slip differential.
Will the Triton come to America?
We apologize for being a wet blanket, but we’re assuming that the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton won’t come to America. Nissan is the primary owner of Mitsubishi and mentioned that it would help the truck sell in the United States.
However, the market share over here is so small, so it would be a significant financial risk. Plus, the truck would need to meet higher emission standards in America, and the chicken tax makes things more expensive.
Does Nissan really want to face another competitor? The Frontier isn’t the most popular option, and the Titan is being abandoned. Truck drama might be the last thing Nissan wants.
