The new Ford Mustang renews the pony car’s lease on life for another generation. Furthermore, it’s soon to be alone in the segment; the Dodge confirmed the Challenger’s demise, and Chevrolet will likely discontinue the Camaro soon. Moreover, the new Ford Mustang GT is the most powerful ever, and it has the horsepower to go toe-to-toe with special editions from the previous generation, like the Bullitt. So, should you buy a 2024 Ford Mustang GT or a 2020 Ford Mustang Bullitt? 

Will the 2024 Mustang GT have a V8?

The 2024 Ford Mustang GT will pack a 5.0L Coyote V8 engine, just like the previous S550-generation cars. This marks the third Mustang generation to incorporate derivations of the Coyote V8 platform. 

The GT’s little brother, the EcoBoost, will also pack a carryover 2.3L four-cylinder engine. However, the EcoBoost will feature forced induction in the form of a turbocharger, whereas the GT uses old-school natural aspiration to breathe. The result is yet another pony car with a traditional V8, rear-wheel drive (RWD) application. 

How much horsepower will the 2024 Mustang GT have?

The 2024 Ford Mustang GT produces 480 horsepower from its 5.0L Coyote V8. That makes it the most potent GT in the history of the model. The most powerful GT prior to the new S650 model is the 460-horsepower post-facelift S550 GT from 2018 and up. 

Moreover, the new GT produces just as much horsepower as the 2020 Ford Mustang Bullitt. The Bullitt produces 480 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque from a similar 5.0L Coyote V8. However, the new GT offers a power-swelling exhaust upgrade that pushes the S650’s horsepower figure to 486. As a result, the upgraded GT out-muscles the Bullitt and even the Mach 1. 

What transmission does the Mustang GT use?

The new 2024 Mustang GT offers a Getrag-sourced MT82 six-speed manual transmission and a 10-speed automatic transmission option. Unfortunately, the Getrag MT82 transmission has its issues, but it still provides fans with a manual option, unlike the new EcoBoost. 

The 2019 and 2020 Ford Mustang Bullitt also uses the MT82. However, the Bullitt has no automatic transmission option. Still, the Bullitt wears a handsomely classic white cue ball shifter to compliment its de-badged stealthy exterior aesthetic. 

How fast is the 2020 Mustang Bullitt?

The 2020 Ford Mustang Bullitt hits 60 mph in around 4.4 seconds on its way to a 12.6-second quarter mile. Also, the Bullitt is governed to a 163-mph top speed. That governed top speed is about eight mph higher than a comparable GT of the time. 

While the Bullitt is likely hopeless to outrun a new 10-speed 2024 Mustang GT, it’s more of a driver’s car than a GT Automatic. For instance, Car and Driver says the Bullitt packs optional MagneRide suspension, 3.73:1 gears, and Brembo brakes that made the Dark Highland Green tribute one of “the best all-around Mustang[s] ever.” Of course, the new Mustang offers performance upgrades that promise to make the new GT a worthy competitor. 

How much is a 2020 Ford Mustang Bullitt worth?

Kelley Blue Book says the 2020 Ford Mustang Bullitt has a fair purchase price of around $44,462 with average mileage. That’s only slightly less than the Bullitt’s original starting price of about $47,690. 

Compared to the new GT, the Bullitt is more expensive but more collectible. If you want a stealthy, more refined Mustang, the Bullitt is the better buy. However, the new GT is better for fans who want a new Mustang with no shortage of possibilities.
