Is the 2024 Nissan Murano Doomed to Disappoint?
The Nissan Murano is a midsize SUV you may have forgotten about. It’s a pretty inoffensive crossover SUV that does many things well, but on paper, it’s outclassed by many of its more modern competitors. So, how is the 2024 Murano selling, and is it any good?
Sales look decent
According to recent sales data, the Murano is having a good year. Sales numbers are up 17% compared to the same period last year. That could partially be because of supply chain issues from last year that have seen some relief this year. Regardless, people are still buying this midsize crossover.
In the Nissan lineup, the Murano is slotted between the Rogue and the Pathfinder. The Rogue is a hot-selling compact SUV, and the family-friendly Pathfinder is a midsize SUV with three-row seating. The Murano is available only with two-row seating for five.
If the Rogue is too small and the Pathfinder is too big, the Murano is just right. It’s good that Nissan still offers a midsize two-row SUV because more popular three-row SUVs often overshadow this segment.
Is the 2024 Murano any good?
It’s hard to ignore the fact that the current generation of the Nissan Murano is almost a decade old. The “Z52” generation of the Murano was first unveiled in 2014 and came out as a 2015 model. The design of the third-gen Nissan Murano was considered pretty daring when it first came out. The curvy lines were like nothing else on the market, and the airy interior was notable for being more luxurious than most of its mainstream rivals.
However, this segment has come a long way since the current Murano was first introduced. It’s up against the Chevy Blazer and Honda Passport, both new for the 2019 model year. Another Murano rival is also showing its age. The Ford Edge also hasn’t seen a complete redesign since the 2015 model year.
Despite its age, the 2024 Nissan Murano gets favorable scores from J.D. Power. It gets an overall score of 84 out of 100. That’s enough to make it tied for second place in its class with the Honda Passport. The Chevy Blazer is number one, with a score of 86. Within the scoring categories of J.D. Power’s ranking system, the Murano gets “Great” scores in “Quality & Reliability,” “Driving Experience,” and “Dealership Experience.” However, it gets only an “Average” rating for resale value.
Is there anything new with the 2024 Murano?
The Murano carried over into the 2024 model year relatively unchanged. Nissan discontinued the S base model. Also, the SV trim (the new base model) now comes standard with a panoramic sunroof.
If you’re in the market for a midsize SUV and you don’t need three-row seating, the 2024 Murano is still a pretty good option. However, if you’re willing to wait, an all-new Murano generation is likely on the way for the 2025 model year.
