When it comes to heavy-duty pickup trucks, there is a wide range of options for truck buyers to choose from. From the tried and true Ford F-250 and F-350 to the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD and 3500 HD, people who need a heavy-duty truck for their jobs have plenty of options. In recent years, the Ram brand has also been given solid reviews for its solid prices and class-leading cabins.

However, there is one heavy-duty work truck that is often overlooked; the Nissan Titan XD. If you are surprised that Nissan has a heavy-duty model in the Titan XD, you wouldn’t be the only one. Many buyers who browse car lots don’t even seem to know the Titan XD is a heavy-duty truck.

Not only is the Titan XD fairly unknown and overlooked, it appears to be one of the worst heavy-duty pickup trucks on the market today.

2024 Nissan Titan XD: price, specs, and features

The 2024 Nissan Titan XD is a heavy-duty pickup truck aimed at the same consumer base as the Ford F-250 and Chevy Silverado 2500 HD. The Titan XD starts at around $51,930 according to Nissan, and for this price, you get a 5.6-liter V8 engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment.

This drivetrain is good for 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque which is solid for a heavy-duty pickup truck. When it comes to fuel economy ratings, there is no posted MPG available from the EPA because the Titan XD exceeds the weight limit for fuel economy reporting. The Titan XD has a maximum towing capacity of 9,700 pounds to 10,898 pounds, depending on how it is configured by the dealer.

When it comes to features, the 2024 Titan XD is stuck in the stone age with aging technology. The base SV model comes standard with an 8-inch infotainment display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and a 7-inch digital gauge cluster screen.

Stepping up to the Pro-4X, SL, or Platinum Reserve trim levels awards buyers with a 9-inch infotainment system and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Finally, the Nissan Titan XD comes standard with a 5-year/100,000-mile limited and powertrain warranty, which is one of the best in the business for a pickup truck.

Nissan’s heavy-duty truck falters in more ways than one

Many automotive media outlets have listed the Nissan Titan XD at the bottom of its class. Car and Driver ranked it last among all heavy-duty pickup trucks, explaining that the truck offers less than the competition, but it is the most expensive offering. Even the well-appointed and award-winning Ram 2500 pickup starts at $48,710 MSRP, which is over $5,000 less than the Titan XD. 

U.S. News also ranked the Nissan Titan XD at the bottom of its class, lamenting this pickup’s low towing capacity, which pales in comparison to other trucks like the Ford F-250 Super Duty. The Super Duty can tow up to 23,000 pounds when properly equipped with a gooseneck hitch.

In comparison, the Titan XD is only good for around 11,030 pounds with a gooseneck hitch. The Titan XD is an expensive, severely outdated heavy-duty pickup truck that is limited to consumers. Only one powertrain is available, only one bed length is available, and only one body style is available.

The Nissan Titan XD is soon to be discontinued

The Nissan Titan and Titan XD are headed for the chopping block. These trucks will finally be dropped from the Nissan lineup after the 2024 model year. The Titan and Titan XD have never fully fit the mold of the American pickup truck. While the newly redesigned Frontier can hold its own as a niche midsize offering, the Titan lineup never offered enough capability to justify its price.

As the sun sets on the Nissan Titan lineup, it is unfortunate that it will be sent to the grave with such a disappointing offering.
