Is the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness Worth the Extra Cash?
If you want to take a compact SUV into the wild then the Subaru Crosstrek should be on your short list. Heck, it even has standard AWD across the entire lineup. But you can also take it further with the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness.
Is the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness worth the extra cash?
The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness is with the extra cash if you need the extra ground clearance, better all-season tires, additional off-roading modes, enhanced engine cooling, suspension upgrades, and unique style.
The Crosstrek Wilderness model I reviewed was $35,560, but before the $1,295 delivery fee and extra tech packages, it starts at $31,995, making it a highly capable bargain.
The black cladding over the wheel arches, hood decal, rook rails, chunky tires, and shade of Geyser Blue paint look great. Multiple people complimented it and it was the center of attention everywhere I went.
This could be a blessing or a curse depending on if you like showing off your ride or want to be left alone.
Other potential drawbacks include:
- The Crosstrek Wilderness has a loud interior but the all-terrain tires and extra off-roading gear add to the noise. Road trips could leave your ears ringing.
- There are no air vents in the rear for my dog or your children. I’ve found that rear air vents reduce motion sickness.
- The tech feels a little dated and the cameras could have better resolutions.
- Thank goodness that roof rails and a 3,500 lb towing capacity are included because there is a massive lack of storage space.
- On that note, the passenger space in the rear is cramped.
Now onto what I like. The GEOLANDER all-terrain tires look great. They’re beefy and chunky and pair well with the black wheels. Plus, they provide plenty of grip. You can confidently feel the grip around tight mountain curves.
They perform well off the pavement too. They make you feel confident and in control on slippery inclines and provide an incredibly smooth ride over gravel and dirt roads.
Also, the roof rack has cross bars, meaning the 2025 Subaru comes ready for that roof tent. It had a 165 lb dynamic load and most tents weigh 150 lbs or less. You could also tow a compact camper.
The off-road modes include Snow, Dirt Deep Snow, and Mud. Hill descent control automatically comes on at low speeds. I’d prefer having control over it, but it’s better than not having it.
There are gauges you can keep on the 11.6-inch infotainment screen that is helpful. You can see your oil temperature, pitch, and roll to keep track of your position and to prevent the engine from overheating.
I’m extremely grateful for StarTex weather-resistant upholstery and all-weather floor mats because I’m messy. I spill drinks, I have dog hair everywhere, and who knows what mud and debris I’ll track in.
The upholstery is easy to clean and seems scratch-resistant. Plus, the Wilderness logo and accent stitching are very attractive.
The 360-degree camera system is helpful for avoiding obstacles. But to be honest, the Crosstrek Wilderness has a 17.39 turning radius, making it super easy to maneuver around tight obstacles without the camera.
If anyone tries to give your Subie any crap, inform them that the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness has a 9.3-inch ground clearance and a 20.0-degree approach angle. A 33-degree departure angle and a 21.1-degree breakover angle.
The 2.5-liter four-cylinder Subaru Boxer engine delivers 182 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. This may sound weak, but the Crosstrek Wilderness can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds, which is good for the class.
Switching from Intelligent to Sport mode livens things up with faster response times and more responsive steering. Plus, there are steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters to deliver even more engagement,
The main toss-up with the Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness is that you’re trading comfort for more off-roading capabilities. It gets pretty loud at highway speeds, otherwise it’s worth the upgrade costs.
