The 2024 Subaru Outback has the unique distinction of being the last popular wagon on the market, and even then, it still has an SUV-like body. Car shoppers are choosing to buy the Outback for more reasons than because it’s a wagon, and one of those reasons has to do with the many trims that Subaru offers. Here’s a look at the 2024 Subaru Outback, the trims that it currently offers, and the one trim that car shoppers seem to like the most.

A brief overview of the 2024 Subaru Outback trims that are available right now

Edmunds gave an overview of the six trims that Subaru currently offers on the Outback. The $29,000 Base trim is the car’s standard trim. After that is the $31,000 Premium trim. It adds premium features, such as heated front seats to the car. Then there’s the $36,000 Onyx Edition. It gets more luxury upgrades, including a sunroof. The Limited trim also costs about $36,000, and it adds leather upholstery to the wagon.

After that is the $40,000 Touring trim. It gets even more features, such as a navigation system and improved leather upholstery. All five of these trims start with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that gets 182 hp. The Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT, and Touring XT are exactly the same as their non-XT counterparts. The difference is that they’re more expensive because they come with a 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that gets 260 hp instead. 

The last trim that Subaru offers is the Wilderness trim. It also costs about $40,000, and it comes standard with that 260-hp engine. This trim features many upgrades that ultimately allow it to become the best trim for off-roading. 

This is the most popular trim on the 2024 Subaru Outback

Although Subies are well-known for their off-roading capabilities, the most popular Outback trim right now is not the Wilderness. The most popular trim is the $31,000 Premium trim. It’s easy to see why this trim is so popular. It’s only $2,000 more expensive than the standard Outback, and it adds a lot of features that owners are looking for.

For example, in addition to heated front seats, this trim adds heated mirrors, a de-icer for the windshield wiper, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and more. It’s a similar story in terms of its tech features. It gets an 11.6-inch touchscreen display instead of the standard trim’s two 7-inch touchscreens.  

Plus, this trim adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the wagon. It also gets six speakers instead of four, and it has a WiFi hotspot while the standard trim doesn’t. Thanks to all of these added features, the Premium trim provides a lot of value for its relatively cheap price tag.

That said, Edmunds recommends going for a slightly more upscale trim. It suggested that car shoppers should go for the Onyx Edition XT. The main reason why the car critic suggested this $40,000 trim is because it’s the cheapest way to get access to the Outback’s optional 2.4-liter turbocharged engine. It also adds luxury features such as a hands-free liftgate and water-repellent synthetic leather upholstery.

Car and Driver disagreed with Edmunds’ recommendation, and instead, it recommended the popular Premium trim. The site picked that trim because it doesn’t think that the optional engine is worth the money. U.S. News agrees with Car and Driver on that recommendation. It picked the Premium trim because it has the best balance of features and price.
