2024 Toyota 4Runner: What Can We Learn From the 2023 Toyota Sequoia?
Toyota has been pushing off the 4Runner redesign for many years, but the Sequoia SUV could give us some insight. The 2024 Toyota 4Runner might follow a similar 2023 Toyota Sequoia price increase and even the engine choices. For now, there is a lot of speculation about what a sixth-generation 4Runner could be.
Will there be a new 4Runner in 2024?
There is no confirmation there will be a new version, but a 2024 Toyota 4Runner of some kind will probably happen. With the most recent 2023 Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary Edition, a limited edition version hit the market instead of the sixth-generation model. The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is fresh off a redesign, and the RAV4 is also pretty new. Really, there is nothing left to update besides the 4Runner.
Looking at the 2023 Toyota Sequoia price might offer insight into the potential price of a 2024 Toyota 4Runner. The new Sequoia 2023 pricing is a lot higher on the available trims, ranging from $5,915 for the Platinum all the way up to $12,940 for the 2023 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro. There is also a new Capstone trim that starts at $76,865.
2023 Toyota Sequoia Trim | 2022 MSRP | 2023 MSRP | Difference |
SR5 | $50,500 | $59,865 | $9,365 |
TRD Sport | $53,215 | ||
Limited | $59,520 | $66,265 | $6,745 |
Nightshade | $60,605 | ||
Platinum | $66,550 | $72,465 | $5,915 |
Capstone | $76,865 | ||
TRD Pro | $64,625 | $77,565 | $12,940 |
If the 2024 Toyota 4Runner does get a significant redesign, it could see some hefty price increases across all trim levels. It could also see a decrease in trim level offerings, seeing as the 2023 4Runner had eight trim levels ranging from $40,155 to $54,620.
A 2024 4Runner could get more inspiration from the 2023 Sequoia
Many people considered the Toyota Sequoia outdated before its most recent redesign. However, the 2023 Sequoia took some big leaps into the future. Thanks to the Tundra’s new i-Force Max hybrid system, there is plenty of power to go around. This system uses a twin-turbo V6 engine, an electric motor, a .87-kWh battery pack, and a 10-speed automatic transmission that work together for 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque.
The cabin of the Sequoia also took a few steps forward, but it wasn’t as far behind as the 4Runner. Seating is between seven and eight, and Toyota offers rear and four-wheel drive. A new 14-inch touchscreen found in the 2023 Toyota Tundra also helps update the interior.
It would make sense that many of these features would carry over to the 2024 Toyota 4Runner. With so much pressure on a redesign, trying out concepts in other vehicles first seems like an excellent way to do it.
Will the Toyota 4Runner be discontinued?
Even though the 2024 Toyota 4Runner has not been announced yet, it likely is not getting discontinued. The 4Runner isn’t the brand’s biggest seller but it is still one of the more popular vehicles. According to Toyota’s First Quarter 2023 U.S. Sales, the 4Runner is the third best-selling SUV in the lineup. The RAV4 is first with 84,704 units, and the Highlander is second with 55,344 units sold so far this year. With 21,116 units of the 4Runner sold, it has still seen enough success in 2023. The Sequoia is also hanging on, though the 2023 Toyota Sequoia price generally starts much higher than the 4Runner.
With that said, the 4Runner has quite a cult following. It is off-road capable and big enough for a family vehicle. People are big fans of the customizable nature of the SUV, and Toyota offers a ton of trim levels to suit many drivers. However, much of the technology and just about everything in this Toyota SUV is outdated. Toyota obviously knows how to update its products, but perhaps combining old-and-loved 4Runner with new-and-finicky technology has proven to be more complicated than expected.
Also, Toyota might be bringing the Land Cruiser SUV back to the U.S., which throws another layer into the mess. Whatever happens, the automaker has plenty of fans to carry the 2024 Toyota 4Runner through a redesign.
