The current generation of Toyota Camry is on the way out. We’re kind of sad to see it go because it’s not just a good car, but it’s the best-selling car in the U.S. The 2023 Toyota Camry does so many things well, it’s hard to fault it. But with a new Toyota Camry update on the way, it’s time for us to make a wish list for the next generation of cars that we’re expecting to see next year.

The 2023 Toyota Camry is slow

Please, Toyota, give the new Camry a better motor. We love the Camry’s quick-shifting eight-speed automatic, but the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine makes just 163 horsepower. That mousey motor means that it takes nearly 8 seconds to get to 60 miles per hour. In a world where most cars are now in the sub-seven-second range the Camry feels slow. Car and Driver simply calls it “disappointing.”

It does, though, get 28 mpg in town and 39 mpg on the highway. We love that efficiency. We do hope, though, that Toyota keeps the hot 302-horsepower V6 option. The V6 makes the car significantly quicker and more pleasant to drive, especially on the highway.

We like the Hybrid, but a plug-in hybrid would be much nicer

Toyota has made great strides with the RAV4 Prime, which is its hot (and fast!) hybrid. By adding a dose of extra juice to the RAV4, it increases its electric range and allows you to drive on all-electric power. While you can get a Toyota Camry Hybrid today, a Camry Prime with a plug-in hybrid option would be welcome.

Toyota has also done a clever job of adding all-wheel drive to its Hybrid cars by simply adding an electric motor to the back axle. The system works well in the RAV4 Prime, the Highlander, and Sienna minivan. We would love for Toyota keep this system on the next generation of Camry.

For the Toyota Camry update, we’d like a nicer interior

Toyota has made some strides at making its cars more exciting. On the outside at least. Inside, today’s Camry is nice, but not that nice. Sure, the cars are built to a price point and we don’t expect Mercedes-Benz S-Class levels of luxury in a sub-$25,000 sedan. But, today’s cabin is full of acres of black plastic and some trim pieces that seem tacked on. The new 2023 Toyota Sequoia interior, for example, is what happens when Toyota gets it right.

We’d love to see a screen that’s more integrated into the dash of an updated 2025 Camry. Today’s car’s 7.0-inch or upgrade 8.0 inch screens look like they were an afterthought, simply placed high up in the middle of the dash. Many cars, and other Toyotas like the Sienna minivan, have screens that feel like they are part of the design and don’t look tacked on.

We don’t have many gripes with the Camry. But, when we do get the Toyota Camry update in late 2024 as a 2025 model, we’d like to see a few things fixed. We know that not everyone is a fan of the current Camry’s batwing front end styling, but we also understand that it needs those big plastic pieces to cover the cameras for the Toyota Safety Sense system. The new 3.0 system will have even more cameras and sensors, we’re just hoping that Toyota comes up with clever ways to package them.
