The 2024 Toyota GR Supra Only Has 1 Small Advantage Over the Ford Mustang
The Ford Mustang is all-new for the 2024 model year. With the latest redesign, the iconic Mustang becomes a more modern sports car while staying true to its roots as an all-American muscle car that you can still get with a V8 and a manual transmission.
The redesigned Mustang is now more competitive with the Toyota GR Supra, which is more of an upmarket sports car. However, when you compare them side-by-side on paper, the Supra has only one notable advantage over the new Mustang.
Still, before we get into that, let’s take a broader look at how these two performance cars compare.
2024 Ford Mustang vs. 2024 Toyota GR Supra
Let’s start with pricing. The 2024 Ford Mustang starts at $30,920, and the 2024 Toyota GR Supra has a much higher starting price of $45,540. The standard EcoBoost turbo-four engine in the Mustang is rated at 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. The Supra also has a standard turbo four-cylinder engine, but it only makes 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. So, already, the Mustang has significant advantages in terms of price and performance.
However, if we compare the base models, the GR Supra has a more luxurious interior than the Mustang. For example, the base Supra has carbon fiber interior trim and Alcantara/leather-trimmed sport seats, while the standard Mustang has cloth seats and a more plasticky interior. However, it’s worth noting that the Mustang EcoBoost Premium model has ActiveX faux leather seats and optional leather seats while still being more affordable than the base GR Supra.
What about the higher-performance variants? The six-cylinder Toyota GR Supra 3.0 starts at $54,50 and produces 382 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque. The muscular Ford Mustang GT begins at $42,495 (still cheaper than the base Supra) and pumps out 486 hp and 418 lb-ft of torque. The more luxurious GT Premium model starts at $47,015.
A couple of other perks of the Mustang over the Supra are that the Ford has back seats (useless as they may be), more cargo room, and a convertible option.
The GR Supra is more efficient than the Mustang
That brings us to the one small advantage that the Toyota GR Supra has over the Ford Mustang. The Toyota is a little bit more fuel-efficient than the Ford. According to EPA estimates, the 2024 Toyota GR Supra with the four-cylinder engine has a combined fuel economy rating of 27 mpg. The new Mustang with the EcoBoost engine returns 26 mpg.
If we look at the EPA estimate for the 2023 model, it shows us that the fuel economy penalty of the six-cylinder is almost negligible; it gets 26 mpg like the four-cylinder Mustang. Meanwhile, the most efficient version of the V8-powered Mustang GT only gets 18 combined mpg.
Of note, premium gas is recommended for both engines in the Supra, while both Mustang engines get by just fine with regular gas. However, even if we account for premium fuel, the six-cylinder Supra still has lower annual fuel costs than the Mustang GT.
If, for some reason, fuel economy is your top priority in a two-door sports car, then the Toyota GR Corolla may be worth considering over the redesigned Ford Mustang. However, the Mustang beats the Supra in just about every other metric.
