The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Is Extremely Efficient for Towing
Saving fuel while towing is important! Typically people go for diesel trucks to access a better fuel economy, but the gas-powered Toyota Tacoma is proving to be extremely efficient. See what the 2024 Toyota Tacoma can do.
How much can the 2024 Toyota Tacoma tow?
When properly equipped, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma can tow up to 6,500 lbs. This is with the standard gas-powered engine. With the new hybrid engine, the Tacoma can tow up to 6,000 lbs. Also, the 2024 Tacoma can carry a payload of up to 1,709 lbs.
The 2024 Jeep Gladiator can tow up to 7,700 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,725 lbs, it has a higher starting price and isn’t as efficient. The Tacoma starts at $31,500 and the Gladiator rings in at $37,895.
According to The Fast Lane, towing with the 2024 Tacoma provides phenomenal results. They towed a 3,000 lb trailer for 1,000 miles from Boulder, Colorado, to Dallas, Texas.
The mountainous terrain included two 7,800 ft mountain passes, heavy rain, high winds, and snow. It was getting about 12.4 per gallon during areas with steep climbs and felt strained while passing others.
But in the flat areas around Dallas, the new Taco got roughly 24.2 mpg, which is impressive for a truck even without pulling a trailer.
The Gladiator gets an EPA-estimated 17 mpg in the city and up to 22 mpg on the highway. We would like to see how it would perform during the same towing test. However, it already falls short against the new Tacoma.
The official EPA rating hasn’t been released for the Tacoma, but it’s getting about 25 mpg in unofficial tests. The Tacoma Hybrid could do even better when it comes out in April.
While the standard Tacoma has a standard turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 228 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque, the TFL team used the upgraded unit with 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque.
The hybrid powertrain or i-FORCE Max engine pairs the same 2.4-liter engine with an electric motor and a battery pack to generate 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque.
