The 2025 Ford F-Series lineup makes diesel engines harder to get
In most cases, really big trucks are the only way to get a diesel engine. Only one full-size truck in America will offer a diesel engine in 2025. Now heavy-duty trucks could be next up to drop them. The 2025 Ford F-Series lineup might be taking the first steps toward phasing them out.
The 2025 Ford F-Series lineup might phase diesel engines out
First, for a bit of good news, diesel engines are still available across the 2025 Ford F-Series lineup. However, it’s unclear how much longer they will be available.
It feels like Ford may have just taken the first step toward phasing diesel engines out because the V8 gas-powered engine is standard.
In 2024, some models like the Ford F-450 had a standard 6.7-liter V8 powerstroke diesel engine. It cranks out 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. The high-output variant delivers 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque.
For 2025, lower trim levels like the XL, XLT, and Lariat trims have a standard gas-powered 6.7-liter V8 engine with 400 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque.
Higher trim levels like the King Ranch and Platinum models have a standard gas-powered 7.3-liter V8 engine with 430 hp and 485 lb-ft of torque.
Every Super Duty truck will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. But now instead of getting a standard diesel engine with the F-450 people will have to pay to upgrade.
I started to play around with the 2024 F-350 configurator and with the changes required to switch to the diesel engine it costs $14,000. The changes include adding 4×4.
It’s unclear how much it will cost to upgrade to the diesel engine with the 2025 models. It could be cheaper with the Ford F-450 since it used to be standard.
However, $14,000 is a huge expense. It’s enough to make people stick to gas. I predict that this could decrease sales, causing the diesel engine to eventually be dropped.
Rumors suggest that the heavy-duty lineup has a hybrid engine in the works. Hopefully, it can compare to diesel power.
