The Ford Mustang’s closest market competitors left the conversation. However, the Blue Oval seems to have big plans for the historic pony car. One of the nameplate’s latest developments is the addition of a range-topper sans Shelby badge: the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD. And while Ford claimed the GTD would be the most unhinged and powerful Mustang ever, the GTD’s real power output is straight-up barbaric.

With 815 horsepower on tap, the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD is the ‘most powerful production Mustang in history’

Ford seems chuffed to call the new Mustang GTD “the most powerful production Mustang in history” and “the apex of any Mustang ever engineered.” Frankly, it seems like a bit of a stretch to call the GTD a “production Mustang.” It’s a limited-production race car for the road with a family resemblance to the current, seventh-generation Mustang lineup. That’s about it, though.

For instance, the priciest pony in the Blue Oval’s non-GTD stable, the Dark Horse Premium, starts at around $69,870. In contrast, the GTD will likely sell for around $325,000. However, unlike the Dark Horse Premium, the GTD summons 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque from its supercharged 5.2L V8. Those figures dethrone the now-discontinued S550 Shelby GT500’s 760-horsepower output as the most potent Mustang.

Still, with race-ready kit like aggressive aero with a drag reduction system (DRS), a dry-sump oil system, a dual-clutch transmission (DCT), and carbon fiber construction, the GTD is more of Mustang in name alone compared to the vehicle’s standard lineup.

Still, even with the extra grunt, the Mustang GTD’s top speed isn’t a unique figure. Ford claims the GTD will hit 202 mph flat out. While impressive, it’s not the first time a Ford Mustang promised that kind of speed. In fact, the late-model S197 Shelby GT500 had a claimed top speed beyond that sacred 200-mph mark. And that was with 153 fewer ponies.
