Why Does the 2025 Mazda CX-70 Cost More Than the CX-90?
Sometimes there are SUV mysteries to investigate. For example, the new Mazda CX-70 costs slightly more than the Mazda CX-90 despite being pretty similar. Do you get anything extra with the 2025 Maza CX-70?
How much does the 2025 Mazda CX-70 cost?
The 2025 Mazda CX-70 has an MSRP of $40,445 and the $1,375 destination fee brings the total starting price up to $41,820.
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 has an MSRP of $39,595 and the $1,375 destination fee increases the price to $40,970. So, getting started with the CX-70 costs $850 more.
This isn’t a drastic price difference, but it’s perplexing because the CX-70 and CX-90 are roughly identical, only the CX-70 deletes the third row to provide more cargo space.
At the other end of the spectrum, the top-spec CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus starts at $58,825, and the CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus starts at $61,325 with the destination fees included. Perhaps providing nicer features for three rows costs more with high trim levels.
Both models start with a standard turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine with 280 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. Upgrade to the 3.3 TurboS engine for 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque
The CX-70 and CX-90 PHEV pair a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a battery pack and an electric motor to generate 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.
Also, the CX-70 does start with a few extra features on the base trim. It starts with the 3.3 Turbo Preferred trim but the CX-90 starts with the basic 3.3 Turbo Select trim.
The standard CX-70 has a panoramic sunroof, a black-out appearance package, automatic high beams, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. It also has available remote power-folding rear seats.
The cargo space figures haven’t been released for the CX-70, but it does have a much larger underfloor storage compartment than the CX-9-.
With the CX-90, you get 15.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 40.1 cubes behind the second row, and up to 75.2 cubes total. It’s safe to expect the CX-70 to have 40.1 cubes behind the second row and 75.2 cubes overall.
Also, both options can tow up to 5,000 lbs and have standard AWD. But RWD is available. They ride on the same chassis with the same wheelbase and should provide a similar experience.
The CX-70 seems to cost more because it starts with more standard features and makes loading cargo more convenient.
