The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is perfect for one type of driver
Have you ever wanted SUVs to have more space without blowing up in size? The 2025 Mazda CX-70 might be your perfect fit for a spacious, convenient ride. Spending a week with the newest Mazda SUV opened my eyes to some of its incredible strengths and few weaknesses.
Is the 2025 Mazda CX-70 worth buying?
Yes, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 is worth buying if you’re looking for an SUV that has plenty of space with a convenient size. You don’t have to go for the Chevrolet Suburban or Ford Expedition to haul all your stuff.
However, it’s extremely similar to the Mazda CX-90. They have the same platform, tech, engines, and more. Only the CX-90 has a third-row seat. If you only need room for up to five passengers, then you’re golden.
Before I talk about what I like here are a few Mazda CX-70 drawbacks to consider:
- The Mazda CX-70 has a higher starting price than the CX-90 despite not having a third row. (2025 CX-70 MSRP: $40,445, 2025 CX-90 MSRP: $37,485)
- The interior features tons of suede-covered surfaces. Sure it’s soft, but will it be easy to stain or will odors cling to it? Will your hand oils make it get dirty?
- There is more interior noise at highway speeds than expected.
- The infotainment system isn’t a touch screen unless you use Apple CarPlay.
- In my mind, there should be an overlanding variant with chunky tires and all.
First of all, let’s talk about all that space! You can access up to 39.6 cubic feet behind the second row with up to 75.3 cubic feet total.
While there are plenty of storage trays and cubbies to be found, the center console is a bit limited. But there’s also an extra storage bin under the cargo floor. If you need even more space, take advantage of the roof rails or the 5,000 lb towing capacity.
Because there’s no third row, you get more passenger space. There is a total passenger volume of up to 141.6 cubic feet.
The front seats are larger, well-padded, and supportive. You have enough room to stretch out and find the most comfortable driving position.
Passengers in the rear also benefit from enough room to stretch their legs and lean back. Two adults won’t have any problems in the back. However, if you have three passengers, then the smallest person should sit in the middle.
Also, there’s tons of convenient access. The doors and cargo hold open wide with the perfect liftover height for loading heavy and bulky items.
My 2025 Mazda CX-70 model was equipped with the standard turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine with 280 hp. The S trims increase the power to 340 hp. Also, a hybrid and a PHEV powertrain are available.
The standard engine provides a smooth power delivery, allowing you to quickly get off the line. But the automatic eight-speed transmission may stumble at times.
It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.5 seconds, which is more than enough speed for merging into traffic and passing others.
The CX-70 has well-weighted steering and responsive handling for confident manvers. Plus, the brakes are smooth without being too sensitive. It’s one of the more athletic options in the class while the Jeep Grand Cherokee L can seem to lumber around curves.
The tech is a little basic, but that’s fine. It’s refreshingly simple without having too many menus to click through. There are physical buttons to control the radio and climate control systems.
I enjoyed using the 12.3-inch infotainment system, but it’s controlled by the classic Mazda rotary dial system. It can be used as a touchscreen if you connect your phone to Wireless Apple CarPlay.
It provides crisp graphics and fast response times. However, the backup camera feels small on the narrow screen. Also, the head-up display is helpful with crucial states like your speed, the speed limit, road sign recognition, and navigation instructions.
Overall, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 provides a smooth ride and quickly dampens larger impacts on the road. Like other Mazda SUVs, it’s a bit stiff compared to rivals, but that’s because of its enhanced athletic performance.
The interior is attractive and filled with upscale materials. Leather upholstery comes standard and contrasting shades of browns, reds, and black trim pieces draw the eye.
Chrome accents and wood appliques help the interior pop while maintaining an elegant feeling. I might be alone when questioning suede-covered surfaces on higher trim levels. The panoramic sunroof allows plenty of natural light to enter the cabin without being too bright.
Overall the 2025 Mazda CX-70 is spacious, comfortable, athletic, and convenient. However, it’s a bit loud at highway speeds, the tech doesn’t have a modern feeling but it’s also not distracting or complicated, and the starting price feels a bit high.
