The 2025 Ram HD Bets on a More Powerful Cummins Diesel Engine
More and more trucks are dropping diesel engines. However, the Ram HD is taking a different approach by eliminating gas engines to bet it all on a higher-output Cummins diesel engine. The 2025 Ram 2500 and 3500 could have the best-in-class power.
The 2025 Ram HD wants a single Cummins diesel engine
Rumors suggest that the 2025 Ram HD lineup is replacing its current diesel engine lineup with a single diesel engine that will offer the most power in the class. The Ram 2500 and 3500 will potentially benefit from this move to provide drivers with more power and torque.
At the moment, the Ram 2500 has a standard 6.4-liter V8 engine with 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque. But you can upgrade to the turbocharged 6.7-liter V6 diesel engine for 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque.
The 2024 Ram 3500 offers the same engines plus an additional high-output diesel version with 420 hp and 1,075 lb-ft of torque.
So, reportedly, the new Cummins engine will have even more muscle. Also, 2500 buyers will now be able to access the high-output diesel variant. Owners have been complaining about the lack of access.
The V8 engine will probably continue to be the standard option but then buyers can upgrade to the sole diesel engine variant. Plus, the 2025 Ram HD lineup will be more competitive in the segment.
With the Ford Scorpion 6.7-liter V8 diesel engine, you get 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. The HO variant provides 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque.
But the Chevy Silverado HD lineup still lags behind the rest of the pack. The Duramax 6.6-liter diesel engine only has 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque. So, clearly, Ram is trying to get ahead of Ford.
Ram HD trucks could also get a new ZF Powerline eight-speed automatic transmission to replace both of the available six-speed options. This will raise the GVWR above the 1,000 lb-ft torque cap.
Also, the Ram 2500 can tow up to 19,990 lbs and the 3500 can tow up to 37,090 lbs. More power could increase their towing capacities.
