The 2025 Subaru Forester Uses Toyota Hybrid Tech
Sharing is caring unless you’re rival automakers! So why are Subaru and Toyota sharing engine tech? The 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid is coming out soon, but it’s borrowing hybrid engines from Toyota!
The 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid is powered by Toyota
Spoiler alert, the 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid is almost here. It could challenge rivals like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, so here’s where it gets confusing.
If the Forester Hybrid could challenge the RAV4 Hybrid then why is Toyota selling hybrid motors to Subaru? I understand that Toyota wants to make an extra buck, but doesn’t it want the RAV4 to continue dominating?
Also, on Subaru’s behalf, sourcing existing hybrid tech from another automaker could save time and money. Who knows how long it would take Subaru to make its hybrid system?
Anyways, the 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors to generate 219 hp and 163 lb-ft of torque. It gets an EPA-estimated 41 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway.
The 2024 Forester uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. It has less power than the regular RAV4 with its 203 hp and 183 lb-ft of torque. Also, the 2024 Forester gets an EPA-estimated 26 mpg in the city and up to 33 mpg on the highway.
It’s unclear if the Forester will pair its current engine with the electric motors or if it will get a new, more powerful engine option. Also, because of its different size and weight, it could have a higher or lower fuel economy rating than the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.
But we do know that the Forester Hybrid will be more efficient than the current model with an improved acceleration time.
It’s safe to expect that the new Forester Hybrid will be built with a smoother ride quality and improved sound-dampening materials for a more comfortable experience.
Tech improvements include a new 11.6-inch infotainment screen and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
Don’t forget that the 2025 Forester will be completely redesigned. You can already see its brand-new exterior style with interior upgrades to launch its sixth generation.
