23 different Toyota models recalled, but this one isn’t Toyota’s fault
The NHTSA recently released a recall of over 33,000 Toyota cars due to a labeling error. Interestingly, the problem doesn’t stem from the automaker at all. Instead, it’s Gulf States Toyota, an accessories and vehicle distributor.
According to its web page, GST processes more than 300,000 Toyota vehicles every year. The recalled vehicles include popular 2023 and 2024 Toyota models like the 4Runner and Tundra. In fact, the list spans everything from compact hybrids like the Prius to the Highlander SUV and Tacoma truck, among others, totaling 23 unique models.
These vehicles, specifically equipped with GST accessories, might have incorrect load-carrying capacity labels. The labels might show inaccurate weight values, which could lead drivers to inadvertently overload these cars.
Here are the models listed under this new campaign:

Overloading a vehicle isn’t just about making it slower or harder to handle. It can significantly increase the risk of a crash. Tires, suspension, and brakes are all designed to handle a specific weight. Exceeding that weight can cause tire blowouts, reduce braking efficiency, and compromise overall vehicle stability.
Thankfully, there’s a straightforward fix. According to the NHTSA campaign remedy, Gulf States Toyota will mail new, accurate labels to vehicle owners at no cost. Accurate weight capacity labels ensure that drivers don’t unintentionally put themselves, their passengers, or others on the road at risk.
The company will start sending correct labels out on September 16, 2024. If you own one of these Toyotas, expect a letter in the mail soon. If you have any questions, you can contact GST customer service or the NHTSA. It’s a small detail, but in vehicle safety, small details can make all the difference.
