The 2024 Mazda CX-90 debuted, and Mazda fans are in a frenzy. Midsize SUVs may not be the most exciting vehicles in the world, but Mazda sure knows how to keep things interesting. It turns out that the CX-90 will be the most powerful Mazda model in its lineup. Yup, you read that right. Here’s what you need to know about Mazda’s latest and greatest midsize SUV model.

Mazda has become synonymous with performance and style. Even its SUV options tend to have engaging driving dynamics and snazzy interiors. Mazda revealed powertrain options for the 2024 Mazda CX-90, and they are glorious.

One of the most exciting powertrain options is the available e-Skyactiv G 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 engine. It produces a massive 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain option comes with a mild hybrid system to maintain adequate fuel efficiency while still packing a punch.

Another of the most exciting CX-90 powertrain options is the midsize SUV’s plug-in hybrid system. It consists of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a 17.8 kWh battery. This PHEV powertrain system makes 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 has powerful powertrain options that are sure to contribute to a positive driving experience. The Japanese automaker is keeping fuel economy in mind as well, so the midsize SUV will still be efficient.

2. The Mazda CX-90 is available as a plug-in hybrid

Rejoice, fellow plug-in hybrid fans. Mazda’s new midsize SUV has a plug-in hybrid option. This option will undoubtedly be significantly more expensive than any ICE CX-90, but PHEVs come with plenty of perks. We’ve already established that the CX-90 PHEV is powerful, but what about the other benefits of this complex powertrain system?

Plug-in hybrids benefit from improved driving range and electric-only driving range. Mazda has yet to reveal how much electric-only driving range the CX-90 PHEV will have, but expect it to get between 20 and 30 miles of range on a full charge based on competitors. Car and Driver estimates that it will get a minimum of 30 miles of range.

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV is good news for the segment as a whole because more automakers are developing plug-in hybrid midsize SUVs. If you aren’t sold on electric vehicles, that’s fine, but who can resist more power and some extra mileage that doesn’t require gas?

3. The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is loaded with standard features

The Mazda CX-90 comes standard with i-Active all-wheel drive, like many other Mazda SUV nameplates. Standard all-wheel drive is great news for drivers that live in areas where an AWD system can come in handy.

The 2024 CX-90 also comes standard with several great safety features like Blind Spot Monitoring, Smart Brake Support, and Mazda Radar Cruise Control. Did we expect anything less? The CX-90, like its siblings, is one smart cookie.

There’s still plenty more to learn about the midsize SUV before it actually hits dealerships, including CX-90 pricing, CX-90 dimensions, and plenty of other important details that consumers should know before falling head over heels for this exciting family SUV. The main question on the minds of many midsize SUV fans is, does Mazda have a real Kia Telluride competitor? It’s too early to tell for sure, but we know this is a definite step up from the Mazda CX-9.
