3 Advantages the 2023 Volkswagen Arteon Has Over the Kia Stinger
The large-car class isn’t as crowded as some other segments, but a few models stand out. Some of them drive like sports cars, such as the 2022 Dodge Charger and the 2023 Kia Stinger. The latter features upgraded sporty handling that many of its siblings lack and two athletic powertrain options. We’re also fans of the 2023 Volkswagen Arteon, another relatively new large car.
Both the Arteon and the base Stinger provide the same amount of power, so which model is right for you? Consider the Volkswagen Arteon if the following advantages are important to you.
1. The 2023 Volkswagen Arteon has better fuel economy ratings than the Kia Stinger
According to Volkswagen, the 2023 Arteon shares an identical powertrain with the 2022 model. It packs a turbo-four engine producing 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
When equipped with front-wheel drive, the 2023 Volkswagen Arteon gets 24/34 mpg city/highway. Volkswagen also offers a full-time all-wheel-drive system, which lowers those figures to 22/30 mpg.
Kia gave the 2023 Stinger two powertrain options, but neither can compete with the Arteon in terms of gas mileage. For best results out of the Stinger, you’ll need the standard turbo-four with 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. With rear-wheel drive, this car gets an EPA-estimated 22/32 mpg city/highway.
If you opt for the available turbocharged V6, that knocks the mileage down to 18/25 mpg city/highway. This engine generates 368 hp and 378 lb-ft of torque. Both power plants pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Kia also says you’ll get an adaptive suspension and a variable exhaust system on the GT trim. Even with quicker acceleration, Car and Driver says the 2023 Kia Stinger GT’s handling leaves something to be desired. Its maneuvers aren’t the cleanest, it doesn’t get the best traction, and the transmission is sometimes too slow.
Meanwhile, Car and Driver praises the Arteon for its composed steering and smooth ride quality. C/D also says the VW has the same swift acceleration time as the Kia Stinger GT, even with 68 fewer ponies. The site’s test vehicle zoomed from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.
2. The 2023 Volkswagen Arteon boasts more cargo space than the Kia Stinger
The 2023 Volkswagen Arteon provides over 56 cubic feets of storage space, with 27 cubic feet available behind the rear seats. Consumer Reports says the hatch is somewhat cumbersome to open, but the cargo area is still quite functional.
The Kia Stinger’s total cargo capacity is drastically smaller at 40 cubic feet. You get only 23 cubic feet of storage space with every seat upright. In addition, Consumer Reports notes the low load floor might be a hassle for some riders.
3. The VW also has a more spacious cabin than the Kia
According to Edmunds, the Volkswagen Arteon has 124 feet of interior volume. For comparison, Edmunds says the Kia Stinger has only 117 feet of cabin space. However, on paper, it appears the Kia Stinger makes better use of its dimensions for occupants.
The Kia Stinger gives front-seat riders slightly more stretch-out space for their head, shoulders, and hips. However, the Volkswagen Arteon’s rear row is more accommodating than the Stinger’s. CR confirms the back seats are supportive and have wide cushions.
However, CR isn’t a fan of the Stinger’s back row because of the sloping roofline. Test drivers also noted the seat cushions were smaller and there wasn’t enough legroom for long-term comfort.
CR was more critical of the Stinger overall because of its subpar ride quality, poor visibility, and difficult seat access. The Volkswagen Arteon also rides low to the ground, but its other advantages make it outshine the Stinger.
