The team at MotorTrend likes the CR-V’s winning combination of innovation, practicality, and a good driving experience. It works well as a family vehicle with thoughtful touches like back doors that almost open 90 degrees for better accessibility and levers for folding down the back seats from the cargo area. And as family-oriented as it seems, it’s surprisingly fast.

The 2022 Honda CR-V is an all-around good choice and at the top of the class when it comes to fuel economy. It drives well, earned strong safety ratings, and offers great value.

2. The 2023 Honda HR-V

The Honda HR-V is all-new in 2023, and it earned a rating of 8.3 out of 10 from MotorTrend. The new version of this subcompact SUV has new styling, better standard safety and infotainment features, and increased power. 

MotorTrend particularly liked the interior design, which borrows the horizontal vent design and honeycomb styling cues on the dash from Honda Civic. They’re not fond of the new powertrain but still find this small SUV fun to drive due to its fully independent rear suspension and its Civic-like body. Speaking of body, it does a good job of keeping body roll to a minimum and absorbs the blows from the road like a champ.

3. The 2022 Honda Pilot

MotorTrend gave this three-row SUV an 8.3 out of 10. While the Honda Pilot has been around for a while, it offers great value for a three-row SUV. It has a thoughtful interior design, impressive performance, and a comfortable ride that’s hard to beat.

The 2022 Honda Pilot has a standard V6 under the hood paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission that offers good acceleration. Even with its size, the ride is smooth, and it’s easy to navigate thanks to its precise steering.
