Certain car accessories make the drive easier, feel more comfortable, or just feel more fun. However, a few are actually dangerous to occupants. Let’s review three types of car accessories you should avoid.

Steering wheel covers

Steering wheel covers might seem like a good idea in older or well-worn cars, especially if you think your stock steering wheel is just, well, gross. However, these car accessories can fit too loosely, allowing the cover to rotate freely around the steering wheel. This makes the driver’s grip less effective.

Consider taping your steering wheel with a tape specifically manufactured for this purpose. If you think you “have” to have a cover, at least make sure it is very snug and doesn’t slide around.

Bulky driver floor mats

Universal and heavy-duty floor mats are great for protecting a car’s carpet. However, thick, oversized mats on the left front area can be problematic.

These floor mats can either wedge up under the gas pedal or even trap it down, which might lead to rapid, seemingly uncontrollable acceleration. The Toyota Camry once had a terrifying recall wherein the left front floor mat would do exactly this, causing deadly crashes.

You can use aftermarket floor mats on the other carpeting, including, of course, the trunk. Stick to OEM or custom-fitted mats for the driver’s side.

Never place towels or blankets in the left front floor area for similar reasons.

Any car accessories that obscure the driver’s view or cover airbags

This includes air fresheners, device holders, and decor. Don’t put anything in front of your face that you feel like you have to “peer” around in order to see properly. Similarly, don’t place vehicle accessories over vents or airbags. These can become projectiles.

In some states, it’s actually illegal to place accessories in the driver’s field of vision.

Keep in mind that the accessories listed here aren’t even necessary for safe driving. At best, they serve a function that helps you navigate the road better, like a phone holder. At worst, they’re distractions or even cause safety issues.

For instance, if your car’s infotainment and navigation systems work, consider connecting your phone to them. This way, you can avoid having car accessories like a phone holder on your dash that you constantly interact with.
