As car ownership costs continue to rise, many drivers struggle to pay for fuel, maintenance, and repairs. While motorists with warranties know that most repair costs are covered, some manufacturer warranties are better than others. Hyundai and Kia are known for their industry-best coverage, but three other automakers offer the same basic warranty.

What do the Hyundai and Kia warranties cover?

Hyundai and Kia provide bumper-to-bumper coverage for the first five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. This comprehensive warranty covers the entire vehicle except for daily wear and tear on parts such as wiper blades, brake pads, and air filters. Tires are also excluded from the basic warranty, but optional coverage plans are available for an additional fee. Although Kia does not cover damages caused by rust, Hyundai offers a seven-year corrosion coverage warranty with unlimited mileage. 

According to U.S. News, “Buyers or lessees of Hyundai cars, crossovers, and pickups receive three years or 36,000 miles of no-cost maintenance and complimentary navigation map updates (for certain vehicles).”

Kia and Hyundai also include an industry-leading powertrain warranty for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. That includes necessary repairs for the transmission, engine, and drivetrain components.

As a bonus, Hyundai’s new vehicles also have free five-year/unlimited-mileage roadside assistance. That includes towing and trip interruption assistance. Kia offers the same package but caps the mileage at 60,000.

Both car brands allow the transfer of the basic warranty to a second owner, but Kia’s powertrain warranty is non-transferable.

The Mitsubishi warranty is comparable to Hyundai and Kia’s coverage

Mitsubishi offers a basic bumper-to-bumper warranty for five years or 60,000 miles and can be transferred to another owner. The automaker is the only one on the list with the same 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty coverage as Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis.

Mitsubishi also offers a seven-year/100,000-mile perforation (anti-corrosion) warranty. Its five-year roadside assistance is comparable to the Hyundai offerings of unlimited mileage. The warranty package also includes a travel concierge and trip interruption coverage.

In addition, the warranty for the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is suitable for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. It also includes total coverage for the battery pack and electric vehicle components.

Jaguar and Rivian also have impressive warranties

Jaguar offers one of the best comprehensive warranty plans among luxury automakers. Its bumper-to-bumper coverage is valid for five years or 60,000 miles — much longer than what other luxury brands provide.

However, the powertrain warranty on Jaguar vehicles is limited to five years or 60,000 miles — considerably lower than competitors. But Jaguar drivers can take advantage of roadside assistance, complimentary maintenance, and trip interruption coverage.

Rivian has made an impressive mark by introducing the first electric pickup truck in the North American market. The EV maker’s bumper-to-bumper warranty is equally notable. It’s valid for five years or 60,000 miles.

And the Rivian powertrain warranty and battery coverage are good for eight years or 175,000 miles. A perforation/corrosion warranty lasts for eight years and has unlimited mileage. In addition, the Rivian Wall Charger includes a five-year warranty, and the basic warranty covers all accessories.
