For years, the Chevrolet Silverado has been one of the best trucks available. It has a comfortable cabin, a large truck bed, and a big selection of engines suited for most work tasks or daily driving. For the 2019 model year, the truck also got a complete redesign, giving it a new face as well as even more powertrain options.

Is the new Silverado right for you? This depends on your interior preferences, whether you’ll be using it for work, off-roading, or just daily errands. We took a look at some reviews from a few great car websites. Here’s what they had to say about the 2020 Silverado.

Autotrader’s opinion

One thing Autotrader was impressed with was just how many options the consumer has when customizing their Silverado. The pickup is available in eight different trims which include something for everyone. The LT Trail Boss trim is great for off-roading and for use in truck racing competitions. If you want a truck with a lot of technical features, the LT, LTZ, and High Country come with the most features and have the best interiors. 

Drivers can also choose between three different cab sizes, three cargo box lengths, and seven different engines. This includes a torquier new diesel engine for the High Country, LTZ, RST, and LT models. The ProGrade trailering camera system, which comes with a “see-through” camera view, is also included on HD models.

However, Autotrend also felt that the number of available options could potentially overwhelm consumers. Even for a seasoned truck buyer, it would take a lot of time to sort through all the different engines and trims to determine which would work best for their needs.

MotorTrend’s opinion

To get a better idea of how some of the different configurations performed on the road, MotorTrend decided to put a few models to the test. First, testers got behind the wheel of the LT Trail Boss Z71. Under the hood, this truck had the V8 5.3-liter engine capable of 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The truck was able to accelerate from 0-60 in 6.4 seconds, which didn’t impress the MotorTrend reviewers. Next, they hopped into the RST trim with the same engine. Its acceleration rate was slightly worse at 6.6 seconds. Overall, MotorTrend felt that they couldn’t recommend this engine because of its poor throttling power.

However, they were impressed with the High Country trim. The tested truck had a V8 6.2-liter engine with a power output of 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Motortrend felt that this engine and transmission were a better combination than the 5.3-liter, providing the drivers with smoother shifts and also improving the towing capacity. It also managed to accelerate from 0-60 in an even 6 seconds. However, even in the High Country trim, MotorTrend noted that the interior was the same quality as the lower-priced trims.

Car and Driver’s opinion

While the previous two reviews were more critical about the truck, C/D had more praise to report about the Silverado. They felt that the new exterior changes made the truck more appealing and easier to handle on the road. With the 5.3-liter engine, the testers found that the truck was as agile as a much smaller car.

The only downside they noted was a slow downshift with the transmission, but it didn’t affect the car’s performance too much. Like Autotrend, they appreciated how much could be transported with the truck thanks to the bigger cargo boxes and higher towing capacities.
