There are three capable and, in some cases, beloved large cars heading to the chopping block before 2024. That’s right; the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 are headed for extinction after the model year 2023. However, these big, comfortable cars are not being discontinued alone; the 2022 Toyota Avalon will be the last Avalon barring some re-release as an electric vehicle (EV). Here’s a little more about these outgoing gold standards in affordable, spacious comfort. 

Is the big, comfortable Chrysler 300 one of the cars being discontinued?

It’s true; Stellantis, Chrysler’s parent company, is discontinuing the Chrysler 300 after 18 years. However, the 300 isn’t going quietly into the night. Instead, Chrysler announced a special edition, limited release 300C with a 485-horsepower 6.4L Hemi V8. Sounds good, right?

Unfortunately, Chrysler is only producing 2,000 of the tire-shredding sedans, and they’re all reserved already. However, you can still find a 2022 Chrysler 300S with an optional 5.7L V8, but you’ll have to make do with just 363 horsepower. I know; how could you possibly make it with just 363 ponies under the hood of your comfortable sleeper car?

Is 2023 the last year for Charger?

Here’s one of the bigger hits for Mopar fans and comfortable car enthusiasts alike: the Dodge Charger is dead, long live the Dodge Charger. Dodge will stop production of the Charger after the 2023 model year. However, while Chrysler fans are losing the 300’s optional 5.7L V8, Charger fans are mourning the passing of supercharged 6.2L Hellcat V8s that will produce 797 rampaging hell-horses. 

However, just like the special edition Chrysler 300C, the mad men at Dodge had to send the Charger (and the Challenger) off with some pantomime. Enter the Last Call models, seven special editions limited to 1,000 units a piece. Still, there are plenty of preowned blacktop bruisers to peruse in the used car market. 

Is Toyota making a 2023 Avalon?

The Toyota Avalon is an understated example of an affordable, comfortable luxury car that offers a lot but not enough to survive the onslaught of SUVs, crossovers, and EVs. As a result, Toyota will not make a 2023 Avalon. However, for the 2022 model year, Toyota offers the Avalon with optional AWD, just like the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger. Unlike the two Americans, TrueCar says the Avalon provides a sensible hybrid system with a combined fuel economy rating of 43 mpg. 

Furthermore, the Avalon offers comfort above its price point, capable of competing with its upper-tier sibling, Lexus. However, with the US market’s focus on trucks, SUVs, and crossovers, Toyota saw fit to remove its large swiss-army sedan from the lineup. 

Should you consider one of the last versions of these big comfortable cars?

While these three doomed vehicles are all “large cars,” they’re very different. The Chrysler 300 offers spacious, understated comfort without the efficiency-focused technology of a hybrid or turbocharged four-cylinder. As a result, the outgoing Avalon is a better fit if you’re looking for a technology-packed sedan with a library of options. 

However, there’s only one reason to pick a Dodge Charger. Quite simply, it might be the most mental, over-the-top sedan of modern times. It’s a sad sight to see the wildly-impractical, smile-inducing Dodge Charger and its big V8s put out to pasture.
