3 of the Coolest Features of Rivian’s Amazon Electric Delivery Van
If you have ordered anything from Amazon lately, you might have noticed a new kind of van outside of your residence. And that is because, in recent months, the company has been rolling out a new Amazon delivery van. It is the Rivian EDV, and it is Amazon’s electric delivery truck.
Does Amazon have a new delivery van?
Amazon is in the process of rolling out a new delivery van. In 2019, the company announced that it was making a significant investment in Rivian. You might know Rivian for its electric truck, the R1T, but it is also responsible for the Rivian EDV.
The Rivian EDV started to go into service for Amazon last year. And more and more models have been hitting the streets. The full order is for 100,000 electric delivery vans, and it is expected to be fulfilled by 2030. That’s a slight delay from the initial date, which was supposed to be 2024. Despite that, there are still some cool features worth noting about Amazon’s delivery van.
1. The Rivian EDV looks cute
If you’ve seen this electric delivery van on the street, you’ve likely noticed its looks. The goal of Rivian was to design a vehicle that would look at home in the neighborhoods that it serves. And frankly, I think they nailed it. The headlights look happy, and you can clearly see Amazon’s logo featured throughout.
In fact, you couldn’t be blamed for thinking Amazon built this vehicle itself. You won’t be seeing the Rivian logo in prominent places like you would expect. Having seen this vehicle in the flesh, the circular LED daytime running lights stand out as do the soft curves.
2. Amazon’s delivery van is modular
The Rivian EDV benefits from a unique modular design. There are currently two different versions known as the EDV700 and EDV500. The larger of the two can hold up to 700 cubic feet of cargo, while the smaller can handle 500 cubic feet. Hence the names.
This is done through modular body panels that are removable in order to hold more cargo. Additionally, it means that repair of Amazon’s electric van is easier. Say, if the front bumper is damaged, it can simply be swapped out back at the home base.
3. Form follows function
At the end of the day, the Rivian EDV is a delivery vehicle. And it’s important that it works for those who drive it. According to Car and Driver, the driver’s seat is comfortable enough to handle a day’s work. Plus, the seat and the steering wheel are heated, and that should help with those cold-weather deliveries.
The cargo area is designed to be easy to move around in. And it is specialized to carry the bins that Amazon uses to hold packages. All and all, most design features are made to ensure that packages can be safely and quickly delivered. And that is something that Amazon customers have come to expect from the company.
