3 Diesel Trucks Under $40,000 That Can Tow 10,000 Pounds or More
Not many vehicles can do the job like a diesel truck. Here are three diesel trucks under $40,000 that can easily tow more than 10,000 pounds. You’ll have to add or opt for the diesel engine option, but that shouldn’t give you any issues. Plus, the pickup trucks below also get more than 25 mpg combined.
The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a diesel truck under $40,000
Upon ranking the best diesel trucks for towing, Forbes said the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 came in at the top. It starts at only $35,600, and the 3.0L Duramax diesel inline-six engine upgrade is only $2,540. With that, the Silverado can tow 13,300 pounds.
People say the Chevy truck isn’t as luxurious inside as some of the other options. What it does well is towing and coming in under $40,000. The Silverado gets an EPA-estimated 26 mpg combined with 29 mpg on the highway.
This Silverado earned a four-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some of the best safety tech included standard includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and lane-keep assist.

GMC’s Sierra 1500 is another diesel truck under $40,000
While the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is pretty similar to the Chevy, it still has plenty to offer buyers. The 3.0L 277-hp Duramax turbodiesel gets 460 lb-ft of torque and a 13,200-pound tow rating. On top of that, the MultiPro six-way tailgate makes hauling stuff around even easier.
The GMC Sierra diesel also gets 26 mpg combined. That comes from the EPA-rated 23 mpg in the city and 31 on the highway. If you add four-wheel drive, that knocks off a mile or two.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Sierra a four-star safety rating. From the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2022 Sierra received many high ratings. GMC added many standard safety features for 2022, including automatic high beams, lane keep assist, and forward collision warning.

Don’t overlook the Ram 1500 and its 12,560-pound towing capacity
Another solid contender is the 2023 Ram 1500 with the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6. It will cost you $4,995 to add on most trim levels, but it bumps the towing capacity up to 12,560 pounds. With 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, the 2023 Ram is still one of the diesel trucks under $40,000.
With rear-wheel drive, the 2023 Ram 1500 gets 26 mpg combined. That falls to 24 mpg combined with the four-wheel drive setup. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Ram a five-star safety rating (for all but the quad cab), and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety made it a Top Safety Pick.
Unfortunately, Ram falls behind in safety features. Adding the $595 Level 1 Safety Group package adds automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and advanced brake assist. Buyers have to level up to the Rebel trim and add the $1,695 Advanced Safety Group package to add more features. All of those push it over budget.

Maximum Towing Capacity: 12,560 pounds
For these diesel trucks under $40,000, fuel economy and high towing capacities are just another added benefit. If you are interested in the diesel option of one of these trucks, your best bet might be to order straight from the dealership.
