Electric cars often come with a significant price, and when you invest in one, you’re seeking top-tier quality, particularly in terms of safety. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing vehicle safety and reducing accidents and injuries, has recently recognized three new EVs with its top safety rating. Let’s explore the three electric cars that prioritize safety, according to the IIHS.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+

The IIHS awards various vehicles a rating based on their safety features. For a car to qualify for the organization’s highest award, the Top Safety Pick+, it has to earn good ratings on the passenger and driver side, a small overall front, updated tests, and an original moderate overlap front.

It must also earn good or acceptable headlights across all trims and advanced or superior ratings in daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluation in its front crash prevention system. The EV has standard driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. Its forward-collision avoidance assist detects the risk of collision with another car, cyclist, or pedestrian and alerts the driver, initiating braking if necessary.

If the system recognizes that the driver isn’t focusing on the road, it issues an alert thanks to its forward attention warning. The Genesis GV70 also has highway driving assist, which helps the driver keep to the center of the lane and maintain an appropriate speed and safe distance to the car in front. Its parking assistance features include a surround-view monitor showing 3D 360° images around the car, reverse parking collision avoidance assist and remote smart parking assist.

The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 aced its IIHS safety tests

The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 scored exceptionally well in its safety tests. The vehicle earned good ratings on its crashworthiness and an acceptable rating on its headlights across all trims. Its daytime and nighttime vehicle to pedestrian front crash prevention evaluations earned superior ratings.

The vehicle doesn’t come with the camera-based exterior mirrors seen in Korean versions, but the automaker makes up for it with other advanced safety features. The Ioniq 6 comes with a standard lane departure warning with lane keeping assist, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature.

Its SmartSense features include blind spot collision warning, forward and reverse parking distance warning, forward collision-avoidance assist with car/ pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane following assist, and driver attention warning.

The 2023 Lexus RZ is a luxury electric car stocked with safety features

The 2023 Lexus RZ earned good ratings on the passenger and driver side, small overall front, updated tests, and original moderate overlap front. The luxury electric car also earned superior ratings on daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention and standard acceptable-rated headlights.

The Lexus RZ comes with a full suite of standard driver assistance features such as automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping and steering assist, and adaptive cruise control with curve speed management, but that’s not all.

The car also comes with road sign assist to help drivers detect signs they may miss and intelligent high beams for greater visibility when the road is clear. Its lane-tracing assist with curve speed management comes in handy on highways with gradual curves. Drivers also have the option to add automated parking for easy maneuverability between tight parking spots.
