3 Frustrating Problems That the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Fixes
We’re pretty excited because the redesigned Toyota Tacoma is finally here! After nearly a decade of waiting, we can see the first significant upgrades of the new generation in action. Here are the biggest problems that the 2024 Toyota Tacoma solves.
2024 Toyota Tacoma: What’s new?
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma is brand new! It has a new exterior look, rides on a new platform, has new engine options, updated tech, and a modern interior. It’s the first time that the Tacoma has received massive changes since 2016.
However, the 2016 model, which ran through 2023, still shares mechanical parts and features with the earlier generation from 2004 to 2015. It rides on the TNGA-K platform like the Toyota Sequoia and Tundra. This is the first time it has shared features with larger trucks and SUVs.
Some fans aren’t exactly thrilled by the new Toyota Tundra or Sequoia, but we need to get behind the wheel of the Tacoma to see if it hits or misses. Until then, there are a few notable upgrades to consider.
1. The 2024 Toyota Tacoma has modern brakes
People often complain because the current Tacoma has dated brakes. The 2023 Tacoma still has rear drum brakes, which are seen as outdated. Rear drum brakes are heavier, take longer to dry, and overheat.
This can cause brake fluid to evaporate and then require more force to stop. Then the drum can warp, leading to vibrations while trying to stop.
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma has four-wheel disc brakes, which are better for managing and evaporating heat. The brakes should provide faster stopping power while being more reliable and safer.
2. The Tacoma has more standard power
The 2023 Toyota Tacoma has a standard 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine with 158 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. This is pretty weak for the modern day but probably provides fleets with savings. Upgrade to the 3.5-liter V6 for 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque.
The 3.5-liter engine is a reliable workhorse, but it’s dated and paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. At times it provides a slight delay upon accelerating. It gets about 18 mpg in the city and up to 24 mph on the highway.
With the 2024 Tacoma, you get a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 228 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. This isn’t an embarrassing standard option.
The hybrid i-Force Max version of this engine cranks out up to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. The fuel economy figures haven’t been released.
3. The new Tacoma is bigger
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma is slightly larger than the outgoing generation. It provides more space for passengers and cargo with innovative storage solutions, such as a cargo shelf in the instrument panel.
Plus, the center console and door pockets are larger. The under-seat cargo storage is three times larger than before, and the rear seats fold flat to create a workspace with a cupholder or flat cargo floor.
The truck bed is 7% larger than before as well. This should make the truck more useful at worksites and for families. But we hope the large size doesn’t impact the turning radius or agile nature.
We can’t wait to take the 2024 Tacoma for a spin to see what works in its favor. Some aspects may have gotten worse, but only time will tell. Stay tuned!
